Common products:
Prunus prostrata is cultivated as an ornamental low shrub for rock gardens, xeriscapes and ground‑cover plantings. It reaches 0.3–1 m in height, spreads by basal shoots, and bears small pinkish‑white flowers in early spring followed by bright foliage that turns bronze in autumn. These traits make it attractive for drought‑tolerant landscaping and it is listed in horticultural catalogs of European and Mediterranean nurseries. In addition, selected seedlings are being evaluated as dwarfing, drought‑tolerant rootstocks for almond (Prunus dulcis) and other stone‑fruit species. Small numbers of elite clones have entered limited commercial orchard trials, primarily in the Mediterranean basin, where compatibility with scion cultivars and reduced vigor have been documented.

Food and beverages (non‑medicinal):
The species produces small, tart drupes that are collected locally and processed into jams, preserves and occasionally eaten fresh. The fruit’s high acidity (pH ≈3.5) combined with moderate sugar content allows preservation without added sweetener, a practice recorded in regional ethnobotanical surveys.

Properties relevant to use:
- Drought tolerance and low water requirement enable establishment in low‑water landscape settings.
- Fruit acidity and firm texture provide suitable characteristics for jam production.
- The shrub can be propagated vegetatively by semi‑hardwood cuttings, yielding uniform nursery stock and reducing reliance on wild material.

Standards and regulation:
Movement of Prunus species within the European Union is governed by the EU Plant Health Regulation (EU 2016/2031), which requires phytosanitary certificates for all nursery stock and graft material to prevent introduction of Xylella fastidiosa and other quarantine pests. Import of Prunus material into the United States is regulated by the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), which mandates a Certificate of Quarantine for any propagative plant parts entering the country. Nursery production of P. prostrata is typically audited under ISO 9001 quality‑management systems, ensuring traceability and compliance with phytosanitary requirements.

Sustainability and sourcing:
Commercial ornamental material is produced by nurseries using cuttings, avoiding harvest from wild populations. Fruit for local culinary use is gathered from cultivated specimens or limited wild collection; the species regenerates readily from basal shoots, maintaining low impact. Global conservation assessments (IUCN Red List) list P. prostrata as Least Concern, though regional monitoring of harvest levels is recommended to prevent localized over‑exploitation. Sustainable propagation and controlled harvesting support both ornamental markets and traditional culinary practices.
