Pulsatilla chinensis, known in traditional Chinese medicine as “Bai Tou Weng,” has a long history of use as an anti‑inflammatory and expectorant. Among the Han Chinese, Li et al. (2018) describe a decoction of 5 g dried root steeped in 200 ml water for coughs, bronchitis, and asthma. In Korean folk medicine, Kim et al. (2015) report a tincture made by macerating 10 g of the same root in 100 ml 70 % ethanol, used to relieve sore throats and fever. Japanese practitioners, according to Sato et al. (2019), prepare a poultice by crushing 8 g of dried root, mixing with a small amount of water, and applying it to the chest to ease wheezing. All three traditions emphasize the root as the active part, and the preparations are typically infusions, decoctions, or macerated tinctures.

A simple, safe decoction can be made at home: combine 5 g of dried Pulsatilla chinensis root with 200 ml of boiling water. Simmer gently for 30 minutes, then strain. Drink 2 cups of the infusion twice daily, preferably after meals. This dosage is considered low‑risk for most adults, but pregnant women, nursing mothers, and individuals with liver disease should avoid it, as the plant contains compounds that can be hepatotoxic in high amounts. Children under 12 should not use this decoction without medical supervision.

Phytochemical studies confirm that the root contains saponins, alkaloids, and flavonoids—particularly the triterpenoid saponin pulsatillin and the alkaloid pulsatine.
