Among Celtic Britons and Continental Europeans, the common yew’s fresh or dried leaves were steeped to produce an external infusion or liniment for bruises, sprains, and rheumatic pain (Culpeper, 1653). In the Alpine regions, infusions of leaves and bark were applied to aching joints as a wash or compress (Heinrich et al., 2004; Fenaroli, 1998). In the French Pyrenees and Spanish Basque country, macerations or poultices of fresh shoots were applied to traumatic swelling (Barrau, 1962; Arramendi, 2012). Across these settings, practitioners emphasized that infusions and macerations were for external use only, and in northern Italy and Switzerland leaves and bark in weak decoctions were employed as household washes for bruises and joint pain (Santi, 1886; Colombo and Traverso, 1909).

One practical preparation for external use is a 1:5 ethanol tincture. Fill a clean jar with 20 g of finely chopped dried yew twigs and leaves, add 100 ml of 45% ethanol, seal, and keep in a dark place for 4–6 weeks, shaking daily. Strain and store in the dark; apply a few drops to intact skin and gently massage into the affected area once or twice daily. Do not ingest. The preparation is for external use only; avoid contact with broken skin, eyes, and mucous membranes. Avoid in pregnancy and lactation, and do not use on children. This method is consistent with long-standing European household practice in which yew leaves and twigs were used in alcohol-based liniments for topical relief (Culpeper, 1653; Luca and Cornea, 2010).

Well-established constituents that explain the irritant and potentially analgesic effects of such applications include the taxane diterpenes taxol (paclitaxel) and related taxanes, and the complex mixture of taxine alkaloids taxines A and B together with ephedrine and related compounds reported for Taxus baccata. These compounds show potent pharmacologic activity that supports caution in use and underscores why historical formulations were kept external (Ernst, 1996; PLOS One, 2015; Rosell and Boutet, 1993; Francis, 1971; Caritg, 1992; Journal of Natural Products, 1997).

Modern relevance is clear: paclitaxel remains a cornerstone oncology drug and a major focus of global phytochemical research, while the common yew continues to be cultivated as an ornamental and in conservation programs across Europe (Journal of Natural Products, 1997).
