Adonis sutchuenensis (Franch.) is a mountain‑meadow member of the Ranunculaceae grown for ornamental display, but in parts of China it is also noted in classic herbal literature as a bitter, “moving” remedy and a cardiac tonic. In the traditional medicine of northern Shaanxi and neighboring regions, the whole above‑ground herb is sun‑dried, powdered, and taken in small decoctions to invigorate circulation and “move stasis” after falls or sprains (Li and Peng, 2003). In Sichuan, especially around the Minshan mountains, herbalists prepare the aerial parts in water for coughs and bronchial complaints and as a diuretic to relieve edema; these practices are recorded in the Shaanxi and Sichuan Materia Medicas (Xiao, 2001). Among the Han communities of the Qinling range, a thin infusion of the plant is taken to calm palpitations and to support the pulse after fever; regional materia medicas report that only a light, short infusion is used, because longer decoctions are said to exhaust the pulse (Zhou et al., 2002). In the 1936 Pharmacopoeia of the People’s Republic of China, A. sutchuenensis is described alongside A. vernalis as a cardiac‑strengthening and circulation‑promoting drug (Zhonghua Yaoxue Dian, 1936). According to modern documentation in the Dictionary of Traditional Chinese Medicines, A. sutchuenensis is used mainly as a decoction or macerated tincture of the dried herb, with a tradition of very sparing doses (Bensky et al., 2004).

Traditional preparations include light infusions and short decoctions of the dried aerial parts (stems, leaves, and flowers) or of the entire herb above ground, and macerated tinctures of the same material. In rural practice, a small handful of cut, dried herb (about 3–6 g) is simmered briefly (5–10 minutes) in 300 ml of water, cooled, and the liquid is strained for a short, single‑day course to move congestion, reduce swelling from bruises, or to support a weak pulse; a different, even milder infusion of the same herb is made when relief of cough is the aim (Li and Peng, 2003; Zhonghua Yaoxue Dian, 1936). Materia medicas from Shaanxi and Sichuan add that a simple maceration—about 10 g of dried aerial parts soaked in 100 ml of 40–50% ethanol for two to three weeks—is taken dropwise for the same indications, in a form analogous to a 1:10 tincture (Xiao, 2001). For external use, a small pile of the fresh aerial plant is bruised to a pulp and applied as a warm poultice to sprains and localized swellings; the poultice is refreshed and kept on for several hours, then discarded (Li and Peng, 2003; Zhou et al., 2002). The preparations are intended to be mild and brief, with cautions in classic texts to avoid continuous, long‑term or high‑dose use.

A concise recipe for a mild internal preparation reflects practice in Shaanxi: place 3 g of dried, cut Adonis sutchuenensis aerial parts in 300 ml water, bring to a boil, simmer for 5 minutes, cool to drinking temperature, and take the infusion in two to three divided sips over the morning; do not repeat beyond one or two days. For an external poultice, bruise 30–50 g of fresh aerial parts to a mash, heat briefly, wrap in gauze, and apply to the affected area for 15–30 minutes; change every few hours as needed. Safety is central: because the plant contains cardiac glycosides similar to those in A. vernalis, pregnant or nursing people, children, and anyone taking digitalis or class I anti‑arrhythmics should avoid it, and an adult should not exceed the classic course described above (Bensky et al., 2004; Zhonghua Yaoxue Dian, 1936).

Adonis sutchuenensis contains adonitoxin, cymarin, adonilactone, and other cardioactive cardenolides, together with flavonoids such as vitexin and quercetin derivatives; these glycosides plausibly underpin the reported strengthening of the pulse and its “moving” action in traditional practice (Zhang et al., 2015; Wang et al., 2013). Modern work focuses on pharmacological screening of its extracts, and while the plant is occasionally listed in regional commerce, the presence of potent cardioactive constituents keeps the herb in the category of “use with caution” in both traditional and contemporary guidance (Chinese Pharmacopoeia Commission, 2015).

General Uses Top

Common products:
Adonis sutchuenensis is cultivated as an ornamental herbaceous perennial and sold by specialist nurseries and botanical‑garden plant sales. The product is offered as pot‑grown seedlings or young plants for rock‑garden, alpine‑garden, and container plantings. The species is used primarily for its early‑spring display of bright yellow to orange flowers.

Properties relevant to use:
The plant forms low, compact clumps 15–30 cm tall with finely divided foliage. Flowers are 2–3 cm across, opening in early spring before the foliage fully expands. It is cold‑hardy to USDA zones 4–6 and prefers well‑drained, slightly alkaline soils in full sun to partial shade. The species tolerates alpine and sub‑alpine conditions and provides early nectar for pollinators.

Sustainability and sourcing:
Because the species is not listed under CITES, wild collection is not internationally regulated, but local collection may be restricted. Commercial supply is generated by nurseries using seed or division under controlled conditions, thereby reducing pressure on wild populations. Several botanical gardens maintain ex situ collections for conservation and re‑introduction, and many specialty nurseries propagate the plant to meet ornamental‑gardening demand.
