Common products:
Forage and hay for livestock; silage for dairy cattle; biomass for bioenergy.

Industrial and craft applications:
Cellulosic bioethanol production – tall fescue biomass has been investigated as a feedstock for fermentable sugars because of its high cellulose (~45 % of dry matter) and hemicellulose (~30 %) content; experimental saccharification studies have reported yields comparable to those of other C3 grasses. The species is also examined as a substrate for mushroom cultivation (Pleurotus spp.). Research uses include a publicly available reference genome and associated transcriptomic resources, which serve as a model organism for functional genomics, breeding and bioenergy research.

Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
Pasture and harvested material are fed to beef cattle, dairy cattle, horses and sheep; dried hay is a staple feed for horses and other equids; ensiled tall fescue is a common feed component for dairy rations.

Properties relevant to use:
Cellulose ≈45 % dry matter, hemicellulose ≈30 %, lignin ≈15–20 %; neutral detergent fiber (NDF) typically 55–65 % of dry matter and acid detergent fiber (ADF) 35–45 %; crude protein ≈10–15 % at early growth, decreasing with maturity. These cell‑wall and nutrient characteristics support ruminant digestibility and facilitate enzymatic saccharification for bioethanol. Fiber length (≈0.5–1.0 mm) is suitable for pulp processes. Palatability is highest in early vegetative growth, decreasing after heading, which influences grazing and hay quality. An extensive root system improves soil aggregation and reduces erosion on slopes, supporting erosion‑control applications.

Standards and regulation:
Animal‑feed uses are governed by national feed regulations (e.g., AAFCO definitions in the United States; EU Regulation No 68/2013). Quality parameters such as moisture, crude protein, NDF and ADF are measured using AOAC Official Methods. For solid biofuels, ISO 17225 series provides specifications for feedstock composition and quality.

Sustainability and sourcing:
Tall fescue is cultivated across temperate regions of North America, Europe, New Zealand and parts of Asia on marginal lands that require limited fertilizer and can be grown under reduced‑tillage or no‑till systems. It contributes to soil carbon sequestration and can be harvested 2–3 times per year, providing a continuous biomass supply. Integration of tall fescue into mixed‑cropping or bioenergy cropping systems offers a renewable alternative to fossil fuels while maintaining soil health.
