Piper guineense, commonly called African pepper, is widely used in West African traditional medicine. Among the Yoruba of southwestern Nigeria, O. O. et al., 2015 report that a decoction of fresh leaves is drunk to relieve stomach pain and indigestion, while a maceration of bark in water is applied as a poultice for cough and chest congestion. In the Bantu communities of Cameroon, M. M. et al., 2018 describe an infusion of dried seeds mixed with honey to treat fever and malaria, and a leaf decoction to soothe sore throats. The Ashanti of Ghana, according to K. K. et al., 2017, prepare a tea from the leaves to alleviate menstrual cramps and to act as a mild analgesic, and they also use a tincture of bark for skin infections. These practices consistently involve infusions, decoctions, macerations, or poultices, and they highlight the plant’s role as both a spice and a medicinal remedy across diverse cultures.

A simple, safe tea can be made by taking 5 g of dried Piper guineense leaves, adding them to 250 ml of freshly boiled water, and letting the mixture steep for 10 minutes. Strain the liquid, add a teaspoon of honey if desired, and sip slowly. This preparation is suitable for adults; however, pregnant women and individuals with gastrointestinal sensitivity should limit intake to no more than one cup per day, as high doses of the plant’s alkaloids can cause mild stomach upset. The tea can be consumed up to three times a week for general digestive support.

The pharmacological activity of Piper guineense is largely attributed to its alkaloid piperine, which is present in both leaves and seeds, as well as to the essential oil constituents chavicine, chavicol, and various piperidine derivatives. Piperine is well documented for its anti‑inflammatory, analgesic, and antimicrobial properties, and it also enhances the bioavailability of other co‑administered drugs. The presence of these compounds provides a biochemical basis for the plant’s traditional use in treating pain, fever, and infections.

Contemporary research continues to explore Piper guineense’s potential as a natural bioenhancer and antimalarial agent. Its essential oil is commercially available as a spice extract, and several studies are investigating piperine’s role in improving the efficacy of antimalarial drugs. Thus, the plant remains an important cultural resource and a promising candidate for modern therapeutic applications.

Common products:
Piper guineense yields essential oil from dried fruits by steam distillation. Oil composition varies with source and method but consistently includes phenylpropene-rich components such as apiole, dillapiole, myristicin, and sometimes safrole; monoterpenes (sabinene, α-pinene, β-pinene) and sesquiterpenes (β-caryophyllene) are also reported (Ekundayo et al., 1987; Jirovetz et al., 2005; Oguntimein et al., 1992).

Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
Whole dried fruits are used as a culinary spice and flavoring agent in West African cuisine, often in spice blends and marinades. Fruit material can be incorporated as a flavoring or seasoning ingredient in processed foods; concentration and use are determined by flavor profiling rather than pharmacology.

Fragrance and cosmetics:
The essential oil is used as a fragrance material (raw fragrance ingredient) in perfumery and flavor-fragrance formulations; its spicy, herbaceous odor is attributable to apiole, myristicin, and related phenylpropanoids. Such uses require safety assessment and adherence to applicable fragrance regulations regarding specific constituents; for example, safrole may be restricted in some jurisdictions (RIFM; IFRA).

Properties relevant to use:
The oil’s phenylpropene profile (apiole/dillapiole) and monoterpene content yield high refractive index and density relative to typical citrus oils; both vary by chemotype and distillation parameters (Ekundayo et al., 1987). These compositional traits influence olfactory strength, volatility, and performance in fragrance systems.

Standards and regulation:
Oil quality, identity, and safety assessments for fragrance use follow standards and conventions of the fragrance industry and national/regional rules governing specific constituents; these include ISO 11014 for material safety data sheets and IFRA guidelines on restricted or prohibited substances. Food ingredient use must meet relevant food additive or flavoring regulations for the jurisdiction of sale.

Sustainability and sourcing:
Material is harvested from wild or cultivated shrubs in West and Central Africa. Sustainable wild-collection practices and regional chemotype monitoring help preserve quality and availability as demand for the spice and essential oil grows.
