Piper guineense, also known as Ashanti pepper, is a West African species of Piper that is closely related to cubeb pepper, black pepper, and long pepper. It is a vine that can grow up to 20 meters in length and is native to Central and Western Africa. The dried fruit of this plant is used as a spice in West African cuisine, where it adds a spicy and pungent flavor to stews. It is also used as a preservative and has been found to have anti-inflammatory properties. Ashanti pepper is similar to cubeb pepper in flavor, but is less bitter and has a fresher, more herbaceous aroma. It is an expensive spice and is used sparingly, often ground and added to soups or rice. It can also be substituted for cubeb pepper in recipes. In addition to its culinary uses, Ashanti pepper has been used as a preservative in research studies and has been found to be the most effective of three native West African peppers. While it was a common spice in Europe during the Middle Ages, it is now primarily used in West and Central Africa.
