Leptospermum scoparium, also known as mānuka, is a flowering plant in the myrtle family native to New Zealand and southeast Australia. Its nectar is used to produce mānuka honey. It is a shrub that can grow up to 15 meters tall and has small leaves and white or pink flowers. Mānuka is often confused with a similar species, kānuka, but can be distinguished by its prickly leaves and larger seed capsules. It is believed to have originated in Australia and was brought to New Zealand by wind dispersal. Mānuka is commonly found on the drier east coasts of both islands in New Zealand and in Tasmania, Victoria, and New South Wales in Australia. It is an important plant for various pollinators and is currently undergoing evolutionary differentiation due to its isolation from other species in the Leptospermum genus. Mānuka has many uses, including as a source of honey, essential oil, and wood for tool handles. It has also been used for medicinal purposes by Māori people. The leaves and bark of mānuka are also used by parakeets to rid themselves of parasites.
