In traditional Chinese medicine the dried aerial parts of Hypericum monogynum (金丝桃) are prepared as a warm decoction for bruises, sprains and traumatic swelling. Practitioners gather the leaves and flowering tops, slice them and simmer 30–45 g in 1 L of water for 20 minutes, then drink ½–1 cup two or three times daily. The preparation is also used as a wash or compress for skin inflammation. These uses are recorded in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (2020).
Among the Miao people of Guizhou, fresh herb is crushed into a moist poultice applied directly to open wounds and inflamed joints, while a gentle tea made from the same plant parts is taken to relieve pain after physical exertion. Li et al. (2019) documented that Miao healers collect the flowering shoots, mash them and apply the pulp to the lesion, covering it with clean cloth for 30 minutes, repeating twice daily. In Korean folk practice the dried herb is steeped as a mild tea to soothe a sore throat and mild cough; Kim et al. (2018) recorded a 5‑minute infusion of 10 g of herb per 250 ml of water, taken three times daily.
One practical preparation is a simple, mild tea: place 5–7 g of dried aerial parts in a teapot, pour 200 ml of freshly boiled water, cover and steep 5–7 minutes, then strain and drink warm. The drink can be taken up to three times a day for the described indications. Because the herb contains the photosensitizing naphthodianthrone hypericin, it should not be used by pregnant or nursing women, and patients on monoamine‑oxidase inhibitors or photosensitising drugs should avoid it; excessive sun exposure should be limited for several hours after ingestion.
Phytochemical analyses have repeatedly identified the naphthodianthrones hypericin and pseudohypericin, the prenylated phloroglucinol hyperforin, and flavonoids such as quercetin and rutin, together with phenolic acids like caffeic and chlorogenic acid (Zhang et al., 2010). These compounds are consistent with the documented anti‑inflammatory and wound‑healing actions. Contemporary research continues to examine H. monogynum extracts for their antimicrobial and analgesic properties, and the dried herb is still sold in Chinese herbal shops under the name 金丝桃, indicating that traditional use persists alongside modern scientific investigation.
General Uses Top
Suggest a correction!Common products:
• Stems used for basketry and rope via bast-fiber extraction; bast fiber is recognized for tensile strength and pliability.
• Inflorescence, leaves, and capsules yield natural dyestuffs; red anthraquinone pigments (hypericin–pseudohypericin fraction) are expressed on flower buds and pressed fruits; historically used on wool.
• Distilled whole herb (herbaceous fraction) contains terpene-rich essential oil used in perfumery and flavor applications.
Industrial and craft applications:
• Natural dyestuffs for wool and silk; pigments extracted by aqueous or alcoholic maceration of flowers and leaves; protein fibers respond to cationic dye uptake, yielding brown–red–magenta hues.
• Tannin-bearing tissues (capsules, stems, leaves) used historically for vegetable tanning; tannin class likely hydrolyzable gallotannins and related phenolics.
Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
• Leaves used as aromatic greens (infusion contexts) in beverages and culinary preparations.
Colorants and tanning:
• Anthraquinone-based natural pigments (hypericin–pseudohypericin fraction) from flower buds and capsule extracts; used for textile dyeing.
• Hydrolyzable tannins in stems and capsules used in historical vegetable tanning; protein fixation via phenolic tanning chemistry.
Wood and fiber:
• Bast fiber from stems separated after retting; fiber length and strength suitable for ropes, cordage, and coarse weaving; low lignin bast composition typical.
Fragrance and cosmetics:
• Herbaceous essential oil from flowering tops; terpinen-4-ol reported (major component); odor profile includes floral–herbal notes, used in perfume accords and flavor composites.
Properties relevant to use:
• Anthraquinone pigments provide bathochromic coloration (red–magenta) stable under alkaline conditions; phenolic tanning compounds exhibit high hydroxyl content suitable for protein binding.
• Bast fibers are lignin-low, cellulose-high; moisture-resistant, good tensile strength; essential oil rich in monoterpenes (terpinen-4-ol, α-pinene) confers aroma and solvent properties.
Standards and regulation:
• Cosmetic fragrance uses subject to IFRA Standards and national cosmetics legislation; natural dye/tanning applications typically referenced to ISO/EU textile and leather standards.
Sustainability and sourcing:
• Harvested from wild stands and cultivated ornamentals; stems are renewable annual growth; overcollection risks local populations; cultivation practices to reduce wild harvesting are favored for fiber and dyestuff supply.
