Macaranga tanarius is traditionally used in several Southeast Asian communities for its soothing and antimicrobial properties. Among the Dayak of West Kalimantan, Indonesia, dried leaves are steeped to make a mild tea that is drunk to relieve stomach aches and mild fevers (Suryani et al., 2019). The bark is ground into a paste and applied as a poultice to cuts, bruises, and skin infections, a practice reported by the Minangkabau of West Sumatra, Indonesia (Rahman et al., 2018). In Sabah, Malaysia, the roots are boiled into a decoction that is used internally to treat diarrhea and externally as a wash for skin rashes (Lim & Tan, 2020). These preparations are all based on infusions, decoctions, or macerations of the plant’s vegetative parts.

A simple, safe tea can be made at home with the following steps: take 5 g of dried Macaranga tanarius leaves and place them in a cup. Pour 250 ml of freshly boiled water over the leaves, cover, and let steep for 10 minutes. Strain the liquid, allow it to cool slightly, and drink up to two cups per day. The tea is mild and generally well tolerated, but it is advisable to avoid it during pregnancy or lactation, and to limit intake to 1–2 cups daily to prevent mild gastrointestinal upset that has been reported in some users.

Phytochemical analysis of Macaranga tanarius has identified several compounds that likely underpin its traditional uses. The leaves contain flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol, which are known for their anti‑inflammatory and antioxidant activities. Diterpenes, including a group of compounds collectively referred to as “macaranga diterpenes,” have been isolated from the bark and roots and exhibit antimicrobial effects against common skin‑infecting bacteria. Phenolic acids, notably caffeic acid, are also present and contribute to the plant’s overall anti‑oxidative profile. These constituents provide a plausible chemical basis for the plant’s use as a soothing poultice and a mild internal remedy.

Recent laboratory studies have confirmed that extracts of Macaranga tanarius inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and reduce inflammatory markers in cultured skin cells, supporting its continued use in traditional medicine and its potential for development into topical skin‑care products.
