Garcinia intermedia, also known as the lemon drop mangosteen, is a tropical American tree that produces delicious fruit. It is also called monkey fruit, mameyito, berba, and achachairu in different regions. The tree can reach a height of 5 meters and is tolerant of various soils and altitudes. It is often grown in pots and requires regular watering and full sun. The wood of this tree is resistant to termites and is used for construction. It is usually propagated from seeds and can fruit in as little as two years. The fruit is a small, round sphere with a thin rind and white pulp that has a sweet and sour taste. It is commonly eaten fresh but can also be used in drinks, jams, and jellies. Native to Central America, this tree is now cultivated in various tropical regions. While it has no known medicinal uses, its bark is rich in tannin and its wood is highly valued.
