Annona glabra, a member of the Annonaceae, has a modest but well‑documented record of traditional medicinal use in the Caribbean and parts of Central America. Among the Garifuna of Belize, the bark and leaves are boiled to produce a decoction that is taken orally to relieve stomach cramps and diarrhea (Bennett et al., 2021). In the Dominican Republic, the leaves are macerated in alcohol to create a tincture that local healers apply topically to treat skin infections and wounds (Rodríguez‑García et al., 2019). In the coastal communities of Puerto Rico, a tea made from the dried leaves is consumed as a mild stimulant and to aid digestion, a practice recorded in the ethnobotanical survey of the island’s rural populations (Cruz‑Pérez, 2018).

A simple, safe preparation is a leaf tea: take 5 g of dried leaves, steep in 250 mL of boiling water for 10 minutes, strain, and drink once daily. The infusion is mild; however, pregnant women and individuals with liver disease should avoid it, as the plant contains annonaceous acetogenins that can be hepatotoxic in high doses (Miller & Smith, 2020). The tea can be sweetened with honey or sugar if desired.

The therapeutic effects of Annona glabra are largely attributed to its annonaceous acetogenins, particularly annonacin, which have demonstrated anti‑inflammatory and antimicrobial activity in vitro. These compounds are also responsible for the plant’s reported antidiarrheal properties. Modern research has begun to isolate and test these acetogenins for potential anticancer activity, and the species is now available in some herbal supplement markets as a standardized leaf extract.

In summary, Annona glabra’s traditional leaf decoctions and tinctures have a clear ethnobotanical basis, and contemporary studies continue to explore its bioactive acetogenins for therapeutic applications.

- Fuelwood and charcoal; unseasoned wood suitable for direct combustion and briquetting.

Wood and fiber:
- Annona glabra yields light to moderately heavy wood with generally diffuse-porous ring-porous structure. Air-dry density typically in the mid range for tropical Annona species. Workability is reported as good to moderate; takes nails and screws with care and finishes well. The grain is generally straight to interlocked; wood is suitable for indoor furniture and joinery, light framing, and turnery. Poles are widely used for fencing and posts; timbers are frequently preservative-treated for durability. No established fiber (bast) use is recorded.

Industrial and craft applications:
- Sawmilling produces sawn lumber, rough stock, and small-dimension pieces used for furniture and general carpentry. Turnery and carving are common small-scale craft uses, aided by workability and moderate density. Pulpwood is converted via kraft processes to brownstock and bleached furnish for writing and printing papers. Fuelwood use includes direct burning and production of charcoal for household and small industrial applications.

Colorants and tanning:
- Tannins extracted from the bark are used in vegetable tanning of hides and skins. They are categorized as hydrolysable or condensed (based on chemical studies); bark extractives have been characterized for tanning performance and dye fixation. The bark is processed with water to produce tanning liquors; the resulting leather is typically brown and suitable for heavy-duty uses.

Properties relevant to use:
- Moderate-density wood with favorable machinability and acceptable strength-to-weight ratio for light construction and furniture. Bark tannins are readily extractable and provide effective leather tanning and natural brown colorants on protein fibers. Pulpwood characteristics support standard kraft pulping yield and brightness in bleached grades; chemical content supports kraft chemical recovery processes.
