Cistanche deserticola, known in Traditional Chinese Medicine as “Du Zhong,” has been used for centuries to tonify the kidney‑yang, strengthen the spleen, and improve vision. In the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (2020) the dried root and stem are prescribed as a decoction for chronic fatigue and impotence, and the fruit is used in a tincture for eye disorders. Among the Mongolian people of Inner Mongolia, the dried whole plant is boiled for 30 minutes and the resulting tea is drunk to treat kidney pain and to enhance stamina (Mongolian Pharmacopoeia, 2015). In Korean traditional medicine, the dried root is macerated in 70 % ethanol to produce a tincture that is taken for insomnia and to support liver function (Kim et al., 2018). All three traditions emphasize infusions or decoctions of the dried material, underscoring the plant’s role as a tonic rather than a topical remedy.
A simple, safe preparation is a mild decoction that can be made at home. Take 10 g of dried Cistanche deserticola root, place it in a pot with 200 ml of water, and bring to a gentle boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 30 minutes, then strain the liquid. Drink two cups of the decoction daily, preferably in the morning.
