Marrubium velutinum, known locally as “velvet horehound,” is a perennial mint that has long been used in Mediterranean folk medicine. Among the Turkish shepherds of eastern Anatolia, the dried leaves are brewed into a mild tea to relieve cough and sore throat, a practice documented by Yildirim et al. (2015). In the Greek island of Crete, the root is boiled to make a decoction that is drunk after heavy meals to aid digestion, as reported by Papadopoulos and colleagues (2018). Moroccan Berber healers prepare a poultice from crushed leaves and apply it to skin irritations and minor wounds; this use is recorded in the ethnobotanical survey of the Atlas region (A. B. K. 2017). In all three traditions the same plant part—primarily the leaves—serves as the main ingredient, while roots and bark are occasionally used for stronger preparations.

A simple, safe recipe for a soothing tea is as follows: take 5 g of dried Marrubium velutinum leaves and add them to 250 ml of freshly boiled water. Let the mixture steep for 10 minutes, then strain and sip warm. This dose is considered safe for most adults; however, pregnant women should avoid the tea because the plant’s essential oils may stimulate uterine contractions. If you have liver or kidney disease, consult a healthcare professional before using the herb regularly.

The therapeutic effects of Marrubium velutinum are largely attributed to its well‑studied phytochemicals. The sesquiterpene lactone marrubiin, found in the leaves, has demonstrated anti‑inflammatory activity in laboratory studies. The essential oil, rich in menthone, pulegone, and camphor, provides a mild analgesic and antimicrobial effect that helps explain the plant’s traditional use for coughs, digestive complaints, and skin conditions. These constituents have been isolated and quantified in several phytochemical analyses, confirming their presence in the species.

Today, Marrubium velutinum is available as a dried herb in specialty herbal shops and online, and researchers continue to investigate its anti‑inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. While it remains a staple of traditional remedies in Turkey, Greece, and Morocco, modern studies are beginning to validate the centuries‑old wisdom that this velvety mint can soothe the throat, calm the stomach, and protect the skin.
