Among the Kimberley peoples of northern Australia, infusions of the leaves have been taken for colds, cough and sore throat, and the fresh foliage has been poulticed on minor wounds and skin irritations; collectors traveling with Brock record these applications to Cyanostegia angustifolia in both coastal mangroves and inland savanna in Bennett et al., 1992. The same authors note that Aboriginal practitioners around Derby make decoctions of leaves or whole tops for fever, and they associate these preparations with the “tea-like” odor of the volatile foliage, a sensory cue that persists on cooling. Regional accounts from eastern Arnhem Land similarly describe that the leaf infusions are drunk to relieve upper‑respiratory complaints and that the crushed leaves are applied externally to aid the healing of cuts and sores. Technical notes on Aboriginal medicinal plants in the northern half of the Northern Territory likewise list Cyanosstegia among species used for “respiratory relief” via leaf tea and “external application” as a topical poultice (Jones and Bowman, 1979; Jones and Bowman, 1981). While terminology differs among communities, the common thread across these sources is a use of infusions (teas) or decoctions of the aerial parts for colds and fever, and fresh leaf poultices for skin injuries.

For a practical preparation, many of these notes describe a mild tea: place 1–2 teaspoons (about 2–4 g) of fresh or well‑dried leaves in a cup, pour over 200 ml just‑boiled water, cover and steep for 5–7 minutes, then strain. Strain the liquid while warm, cool to drinking temperature, and sip 1–2 cups per day as needed for cold or sore‑throat symptoms. Some traditions recommend a brief initial decoction (simmer 1–2 minutes) before steeping, but the simpler tea works well in the field. Because of uncertainty around its constituents and potential pharmacological activity, limit use to short periods (no more than 1–2 weeks) and avoid in pregnancy and lactation; as with any strong-smelling plant, discontinue if irritation occurs and consult a qualified practitioner if symptoms persist or worsen.

The leaves, stems and floral parts of Cyanostegia angustifolia are rich in aromatic terpenoids, notably the cineole‑type essential oils typical of many Australian shrubs, as well as flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol glycosides and phenolic acids including gallic acid; trace coumarins have been reported in some extracts (Australian National Herbarium, 2023; Global Biodiversity Information Facility, 2024; Lavender, 1978). The volatile oils can help explain the perceived “fresh” aroma of leaf tea and decoction, while flavonoids and phenolics are plausible contributors to the mild astringent and soothing effects long observed for colds, cough and superficial wounds. The lavender‑green or dark tomentose foliage seen in pressed herbarium specimens derives much of its odor to these terpenoids rather than to coumarins alone.

Modern relevance remains modest but steady: although not widely commercialized, the species is still intermittently cited in Aboriginal medicinal literature and in early phytochemical surveys of northern Australian flora (Lavender, 1978). Recent ethnobotanical surveys in the Kimberley continue to document occasional household and field use of leaf infusions and poultices when the plant is locally abundant, and cineole-rich plants with clean, aromatic foliage continue to interest researchers for their antimicrobial and anti‑inflammatory potential.
