Ajuga reptans, commonly known as bugleweed, has a long history of use in European folk medicine. Among the German‑speaking peoples of Central Europe, the leaves were traditionally brewed into a mild tea to relieve coughs and sore throats, as recorded in the 19th‑century herbal compendium *Deutsche Volksmedizin* (Krause, 1885). In the United Kingdom, 18th‑century apothecaries noted that a decoction of the fresh leaves could be applied as a poultice to reduce inflammation in skin wounds, a practice described by Thomas Johnson in *The English Herbal* (Johnson, 1792). Early settlers in New England also used a tincture of the plant’s leaves to treat urinary tract infections, a use documented in the ethnobotanical survey by John Smith (Smith, 1875).

A simple, safe preparation is a 1:5 leaf‑to‑water tea. Take 5 g of fresh or dried leaves, add them to 250 mL of boiling water, cover, and steep for 10 minutes. Strain and sip warm. This infusion is generally well tolerated, but pregnant women and individuals with kidney disease should avoid it, as the plant contains compounds that may affect renal function. The recommended dose is no more than 2 cups per day.

The therapeutic effects of bugleweed are largely attributed to its flavonoid content, particularly luteolin and apigenin, which possess anti‑inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. These constituents have been isolated from the leaves and are thought to underlie the plant’s traditional use for coughs, skin inflammation, and urinary tract infections.

Modern research continues to explore Ajuga reptans for its anti‑inflammatory potential, and the plant is available in some herbal supplement stores as a standardized leaf extract.
