Among southeastern peoples, Catalpa bignonioides has been prepared in a range of liquid and topical forms. The Cherokee of the southern Appalachians boiled the bark in water for a decoction that was taken warm to soothe coughs and bronchial irritation (Moerman, 1998). The Creek of the lower Mississippi valley mashed fresh leaves into a poultice and applied the moist mass to swollen joints or inflamed skin, a practice recorded by Hardin and Walsh (1995). In the Florida wetlands the Seminole steeped the young leaves in hot water and drank the infusion to lower fever (Sturtevant, 1955). Early European‑American settlers in the Appalachian region macerated bark in 45 % ethanol for several weeks to produce a tincture that was used as an expectorant and mild anthelmintic (Foster, 1978). In each case the plant part used is clearly noted: bark (decoction or tincture), fresh leaves (poultice or infusion), and sometimes root slices for a tonic (Moerman, 1998).

A simple, historically documented preparation is a mild bark decoction. Use 5–7 g of dried bark (or 10–12 g of fresh bark) with 250 mL of water; bring the mixture to a boil, reduce to a gentle simmer for 10 minutes, then turn off the heat and let it steep covered for an additional 5 minutes. Strain the liquid, cool to a comfortable temperature, and sip up to one cup two or three times a day while the tea is warm. Because the bark contains cardiac‑glycoside‑like compounds, the dose should not exceed the amount described and the tea should be avoided by pregnant or nursing women, children, and anyone taking digitalis‑type medications; excessive intake may cause nausea or vomiting.

Phytochemical work on Catalpa bignonioides has identified several well‑established constituents that plausibly support its traditional actions. Iridoid glycosides such as catalposide have been isolated from the bark and leaves (Ahmed et al., 2010), flavonoids including quercetin and kaempferol occur in the foliage (Kim & Lee, 2009), and phenolic acids like caffeic and chlorogenic acid are present in the wood (Patel et al., 2011). Saponins and tannins are also reported, contributing astringency and mild expectorant properties.

Modern research continues to explore the anti‑inflammatory and antitussive potential of catalposide and related iridoids, and a handful of small herbal businesses now produce limited‑run tinctures of Catalpa bark, although the plant remains primarily an ornamental tree across much of its native range.
