It is not improbable that the tree was introduced into the Old World in the 17th century by returning colonists who planted it for ornament, and it is recorded to have been cultivated in Germany in 1726.

Catalpa bignonioides is a deciduous tree native to the southeastern United States, commonly known as southern catalpa, cigartree, or Indian-bean-tree. It is often used as a garden and street tree due to its medium size and attractive features. The tree has a short, thick trunk and large, heart-shaped leaves that secrete nectar from tiny glands. Its flowers are white with yellow spots and bloom in late spring or early summer. The tree produces long, thin bean pods that often stay attached during winter. It is closely related to the northern catalpa and can be distinguished by its smaller flowers and slender seed capsules. The tree has a symbiotic relationship with hawkmoth caterpillars, which feed on its leaves and attract bodyguard ants for added protection. Catalpa bignonioides is widely cultivated and has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
