Common products:
Sawn timber, veneer, and turning stock for indoor furniture and joinery; interior paneling and flooring; occasionally specialty plywood; limited pulp and paper applications.

Industrial and craft applications:
Sissoo yields medium-density hardwood suitable for high-grade furniture, cabinetry, moldings, doors, and interior paneling. It is valued for turning, carving, and joinery because of workable grain, moderate hardness, and dimensional stability after drying. Conversion difficulties due to interlocked grain and a tendency to split require careful sawing and machining; this influences utilization patterns and affects the economics of industrial processing.

Wood and fiber:
The species is ring-porous with interlocked grain and included sapwood; tangential shrinkage is moderate and radial shrinkage moderate to high, leading to shrinkage-related movement. Heartwood is durable to very durable against dry-wood borers and moderately durable to decay fungi in outdoor exposure. These properties support uses in interior and well-protected exterior joinery and furniture, while structural uses are constrained by movement and workability considerations.

Colorants and tanning:
Heartwood is rich in flavonoids, including retusin, sissotrin, and sissotrin B, but these are typically viewed as extractives in wood processing rather than a source of commercial dyes.

Sustainability and sourcing:
Natural distribution is fragmented in the Indian subcontinent and increasingly scarce in natural stands; most commercial timber is plantation-grown. Species-specific registration under CITES Appendix II affects export and trade controls in many jurisdictions. Availability is regional and influenced by plantation age, local harvesting regulations, and certification practices.

Properties relevant to use:
Density approximately 0.65–0.80 g/cm³; wood is moderately hard and somewhat brittle, with interlocked grain and moderate to high shrinkage; strength properties are adequate for furniture and interior joinery. The heartwood’s durability is supported by extractives and the proportion of lignin and cellulose typical of hardwoods, which also influence its performance in flooring and paneling.

Standards and regulation:
Timber is governed by national forestry and phytosanitary regulations; trade is subject to CITES Appendix II permitting where applicable, and export/import may require CITES and/or FLEGT licensing under applicable timber-trade agreements.
