Bauhinia purpurea is a flowering plant in the Fabaceae family, native to India and Myanmar but now widely introduced in tropical and subtropical regions. It is also known as the orchid tree, purple bauhinia, and butterfly tree. This small to medium-sized deciduous tree has unique bilobed leaves and fragrant pink flowers. It is cultivated in various parts of the world, including the United States, for its edible leaves and flowers. In traditional medicine, it is used to treat various ailments and is known for its laxative properties. Chemical compounds have also been isolated from this plant, including flavonoids and fatty esters.
