Valeriana jatamansi, known as Indian valerian, has a long history of use as a calming infusion in several Himalayan traditions. In Ayurvedic texts the root is boiled into a decoction to treat insomnia, nervous tension, and mild anxiety (Sharma et al., 2015). Tibetan practitioners prepare a decoction of the root for “sleeping sickness” and for easing muscle spasms, citing the plant’s sedative properties (Kang et al., 2018). In Nepalese folk medicine, a macerated tincture of the dried root is taken orally to relieve postpartum depression and to calm the nervous system (Thapa & Gurung, 2019). All three traditions use the root, either boiled or macerated, and the preparations are typically taken in the evening or before bedtime.

A simple, safe tea can be made at home. Take 5 g of dried Valeriana jatamansi root, add it to 250 ml of boiling water, and let it steep for 10 minutes. Strain the liquid and drink one cup in the evening. Because the root contains potent sedatives, limit intake to one cup per night and avoid alcohol or other central‑nervous‑system depressants. Pregnant or nursing women should refrain from using this infusion, and anyone with liver disease should consult a healthcare professional before use.

The calming effect of Valeriana jatamansi is largely attributed to its valepotriate alkaloids, valerenic acid, and related sesquiterpenes, all of which have been isolated from the root and shown to modulate GABAergic neurotransmission (Bhat et al., 2017). These compounds are well documented in the literature and provide a clear pharmacological basis for the plant’s traditional use as a sedative and anxiolytic.

Recent clinical trials have confirmed the anxiolytic activity of Valeriana jatamansi extracts, and the root is now sold worldwide as a dietary supplement in capsule and tincture form. Its continued use in Himalayan communities, combined with modern research, keeps this ancient remedy relevant for people seeking natural sleep aids today.
