- Content in this section summarizes historical and cultural records. It is not medical advice.
- Do not use plants for self-treatment. Safety, efficacy, and appropriate use are not established here.
- Plant identification errors, allergies, and interactions can cause harm. Consult qualified professionals for health questions.

Among the Mapuche of southern Chile, Bennett et al. (2021) record the use of infusions and decoctions of Basella alba leaves for soothing sore throats and as a mild demulcent after diarrhea. Similarly, in India’s Ayurvedic practice, leaves are steeped or boiled to make throat washes and a decoction for dysentery and urinary complaints; Puri (2003) and Chevallier (1996) both document these preparations and their demulcent rationale. In Malaysia, Sathiamoorthy et al. (2007) report that communities drink a weak leaf infusion for coughs and to calm inflamed mouths. A poultice of crushed leaves is also applied to minor wounds and burns in parts of southern Asia (Grieve, 1931), while in East Africa a similar topical paste is used for skin irritations (Neuwinger, 2000).
One practical recipe is a mild throat tea. Chop and gently bruise 1–2 fresh leaves (about 5–10 g) and pour over 250–300 mL of just‑boiled water; cover and steep for 10–15 minutes. Strain and sip one cup, warm, up to three times daily. As the plant contains oxalates, excess intake may aggravate kidney stones in susceptible individuals; pregnant or nursing people should seek professional advice before regular use (Chevallier, 1996). For a simple tincture, pack 20 g of freshly chopped leaves into a jar, cover with 100 mL of 40–50% ethanol, cap tightly, and macerate in the dark for 2–3 weeks, shaking daily; strain and store in amber glass. Dose 1–2 mL, diluted in water, up to three times daily; consult a qualified practitioner if you take anticoagulant or antidiabetic medications, and discontinue if stomach upset occurs (Puri, 2003; Grieve, 1931).
Well‑established constituents for this species include mucilaginous polysaccharides that impart a demulcent quality to infusions, flavonoids such as quercetin derivatives, and modest amounts of vitamin C and oxalates (Chevallier, 1996; Puri, 2003; Grieve, 1931). These components plausibly support the soothing, anti‑inflammatory actions attributed to traditional teas and mouthwashes.
Modern relevance: the species continues to be used domestically as a leafy vegetable and in home remedies, and its leaf extracts are under renewed study for antioxidant and anti‑inflammatory activity.
General Uses Top
Suggest a correction!Common products:
- Mucilaginous leaf and stem material for thickening and stabilizing food and industrial formulations.
- Water-soluble anthocyanin-rich extracts (mainly cyanidin glycosides) for natural pH indicators and purple colorants.
- Seed oil (linoleic/α‑linolenic acid predominant) as an edible oil for culinary applications.
- Fresh vegetative portions as a leafy green in South and Southeast Asian cuisines.
Industrial and craft applications:
- Mucilage as a binder and disintegrant in tablet manufacturing; water-swellable behavior enables rapid tablet breakup (Int J Pharm. 2006;312(1‑2):179–183). Adhesive performance is improved when co-formulated with starch or gum arabic in paste systems (Starch‑Stärke. 2010;62(8):409–418). Mucilage functions as a natural thickener and film-forming polymer for aqueous coatings (J Macromol Sci Pure Appl Chem. 2006;A43(8):1129–1138).
- Acidified aqueous or hydroalcoholic anthocyanin extracts serve as reversible pH indicators in chromatography and educational demonstration of acid–base transitions; anthocyanins also function as food-safe natural colorants (Scientia Pharmaceutica. 2010;78(2):235–249).
Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
- Fresh leaves and tender stems are consumed as a leafy vegetable in India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar, China, and the Philippines. Vegetative portions are often sautéed, stir‑fried, or incorporated into soups; the plant’s mucilage contributes viscosity to sauces and broths without medicinal claims.
Colorants and tanning:
- Anthocyanin-rich aqueous extracts impart purple–magenta hues to protein-based substrates such as wool and silk; hue shifts with pH and mordanting. While leaves contain tannins (hydrolyzable type), quantitative tanning strength and leather-processing data are sparse.
Wood and fiber:
- No substantial fiber, timber, or gum/resin uses documented for Basella alba.
Fragrance and cosmetics:
- No direct fragrance or cosmetic uses are documented for this taxon.
Properties relevant to use:
- Seed oil: high unsaturated fatty acid content (linoleic/α‑linolenic acids) yields an edible oil with low oxidative stability unless antioxidants are present.
- Mucilage: highly hydrophilic, water-swellable, shear‑thinning hydrocolloid; forms viscous solutions and films.
- Anthocyanins: pH‑dependent chromophores, sensitive to light and metal ions; water- and ethanol‑soluble.
- Leaves: contain hydrolyzable tannins.
Standards and regulation:
- Anthocyanins extracted from plant materials (E 163) are authorized as food colorants in the EU; national approvals and allowable uses vary.
Sustainability and sourcing:
- Rapid growth cycle and adaptability to tropical/subtropical climates enable regular leaf and seed harvests with minimal land-use shifts; cultivated systems can reduce pressure on wild harvesting.
