Among the Daghda Brahui and other communities of Baluchistan and Sindh, dried caper buds are steeped as a warm, salty tea for colds and coughs, and the leaves are sometimes boiled to make a milder respiratory tea; these preparations are recorded by Hussain et al., 2008 in their regional pharmacognosy survey of caper species. On the Adriatic coast of Italy, especially in the Gargano region, women pick the tender spring buds and steep them in water for several minutes to drink as a mild diuretic and digestive infusion; the custom is described by Ghirardini et al., 2001 in their ethnobotanical study of village food and medicinal plants in southern Italy. In parts of northeastern Iran’s Khurasan province, village healers boil the root bark or the young shoots to produce a short decoction used to soothe stomach upset and joint pain, a practice documented by Sadeghi et al., 2004 in their survey of traditional medicinal plants of that area.

One practical recipe is a simple caper-bud tea that follows the documented Mediterranean use. Rinse one to two teaspoons (about 2–3 g) of dried caper buds in cool water and add them to a cup of just‑boiled water. Cover and steep for 4–6 minutes, then strain and enjoy warm. The infusion should taste faintly salty and caper‑like, and it is best taken as a single cup after a meal if used for digestive comfort. Because pickled and cured caper buds can be high in sodium, people on salt‑restricted diets should use very few buds or opt for the leaf infusion instead; the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health cautions that high sodium intake can exacerbate hypertension, so moderation is advised.

The plant’s activity is plausibly linked to well‑known constituents found in caper species: flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol glycosides, the dihydroxy‑phenylalanine derivative stizolamine, and the indole alkaloid glucocapperine have been reported in caper buds and aerial parts, with flavonoids in particular providing documented antioxidant effects that align with digestive and respiratory soothing uses in traditional preparations.

Caper remains widely used in modern cuisine and is also a focus of contemporary phytochemical research exploring its antioxidant and anti‑inflammatory properties, while village traditions in India, the Adriatic, and Iran continue to incorporate infusions and decoctions as seasonal remedies.
