Tordylium apulum, also known as the Mediterranean hartwort, is a plant in the carrot family that is native to Europe and Western Asia. It has been introduced to the United States, where it can be found in Arizona. The plant is named after the belief that female deer would seek out its leaves after giving birth, possibly indicating medicinal properties. It grows up to 50 centimeters tall and has white flowers with 1 petal. The plant is commonly found in waste land and by waysides and can grow in various types of soil. Its flowers are pollinated by insects and it is self-fertile. The leaves of the plant are edible and used in cooking, and its essential oil has been studied for its composition. In popular culture, it was associated with the zodiac sign Pisces during the Medieval and Renaissance periods.
