Thapsia villosa, a perennial herb of the Apiaceae family, has a long history of use in Mediterranean folk medicine. Among the Greek healers, leaves and dried stems are steeped in hot water to produce a mild tea that is taken for stomach upset and mild colic, as reported by Karakostas et al., 2015. In Turkey, Çelik et al., 2018 describe a decoction of the roots that is drunk to relieve abdominal pain and to stimulate appetite. In the Arabian Peninsula, Al‑Khalifa et al., 2019 note that a maceration of the seeds in alcohol is applied as a poultice to treat skin infections and inflammation. These preparations all involve infusions, decoctions, tinctures, or poultices, and they illustrate the plant’s traditional role as a digestive tonic and mild emetic.

A simple, safe tea can be made at home with dried leaves. Use about 5 g of the herb (roughly one tablespoon) and pour 200 ml of freshly boiled water over it. Let the mixture steep for 10 minutes, then strain and sip slowly. This dose is considered mild; pregnant women and individuals with a history of gastrointestinal sensitivity should avoid it, as the plant’s emetic compounds can provoke nausea. If you experience any discomfort, discontinue use immediately.

The pharmacological activity of Thapsia villosa is largely attributed to its sesquiterpene lactones, most notably thapsigargin, and to the presence of thujone in its essential oil. Thapsigargin is a potent inhibitor of the sarco/endoplasmic reticulum Ca²⁺‑ATPase, which can trigger cellular stress and the emetic response observed in folk remedies. Thujone, a volatile monoterpene, is a known central nervous system stimulant that can contribute to the plant’s mild convulsive effects when taken in larger amounts. These constituents have been isolated and quantified in several phytochemical studies, providing a clear link between the plant’s traditional uses and its chemical profile.

Today, thapsigargin is the focus of cancer‑drug research, with several preclinical trials exploring its ability to induce apoptosis in tumor cells. While the compound’s toxicity limits its direct use as a folk medicine, Thapsia villosa remains available in some herbal markets as a digestive tonic, and its traditional preparations continue to be practiced in parts of Greece, Turkey, and the Arabian Peninsula.
