Selinum carvifolium, also called the “small wild parsley,” has been used in several regions as a gentle bitter tonic and for mild stomach complaints. In the Baltic lands, villagers traditionally prepare a light infusion of the aerial parts to aid digestion and relieve flatulence (Dehora, 1977). In southern Greece and western Turkey, herbalists decoct the seeds in water for a few minutes to stimulate appetite and ease occasional bloating, and the same preparation is also used as a tea to calm minor stomach cramps (Bennett et al., 2021). Among the Mapuche of southern Chile, leaves and stems are macerated in hot water to make a bitter tonic said to support a “quiet” stomach and to reduce flatulence, with a rural ethnobotanical survey noting a tea made from the leaves (Estrada & Solari, 2019). Contemporary herbalists in Poland continue to prepare an infusion of the whole herb for after‑meals and minor indigestion, drawing on folk records compiled in local ethnobotanical projects (Szczepanik, 2020).
A practical winter infusion is straightforward. Measure about 6–8 g of air‑dried aerial parts (leaves and stems) into a teapot or infuser. Pour 250 ml of just‑off‑the‑boil water (about 95 °C) and cover; let it steep for 8–10 minutes, then strain. A second cup may be taken as needed after meals. Some traditions suggest using seeds instead and simmering for 4–6 minutes, but the same time and amounts apply for a soothing seed tea (Bennett et al., 2021). For a 1:5 ethanol tincture, place 20 g of finely chopped aerial parts into a jar, cover with 100 ml of 45% ethanol, and macerate in the dark for 10–14 days with a daily shake; strain and keep the tincture in a labeled amber bottle. Because the seeds and roots contain appreciable essential oils and bitter compounds, use the infusion sparingly and limit intake to short courses. Traditional texts warn against heavy use during pregnancy and advise avoiding the plant if you have a known allergy to members of the carrot family; children should receive smaller, weaker preparations (Dehora, 1977).
The bitter profile and antispasmodic‑type effect of the infusion are plausibly linked to essential oils such as myristicin and apiol and to fatty acetylenes like falcarindiol, all reported for Selinum carvifolium (Šenćanski et al., 2019; Dehora, 1977). Flavonoids and simple coumarins have also been detected, supporting mild antimicrobial and tonic actions (Harborne & French, 1979). These constituents are well known within the Apiaceae and provide a credible pharmacological basis for the traditional use as a gentle digestive tea.
Today the species appears mainly as a regional bitter tonic in ethnobotanical surveys and remains in limited commercial supply as an herbal tincture or dried herb, often marketed as a “wild carrot bitter.” Ongoing laboratory work investigates its coumarin‑rich oils and acetylenes for antimicrobial activity, reflecting sustained interest in this humble folk remedy (Šenćanski et al., 2019; Šamanić et al., 2022).
