Bupleurum salicifolium has been employed in peer‑reviewed molecular phylogenetic investigations of the genus Bupleurum and the broader Apiaceae family. Chloroplast markers such as rbcL and matK, as well as nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences, have been generated from leaf or flower material and deposited in GenBank, allowing comparative systematics and divergence‑time estimates (Plunkett & Downie 1999). The species also serves as a voucher in herbarium collections for taxonomic revisions and in cytogenetic studies, where diploid chromosome numbers of 2n = 22 have been reported. Its occurrence in Mediterranean scrubland makes it a model for phylogeographic studies of the B. salicifolium clade, and its genome size (≈2.2 pg/2C) has been measured in surveys of nuclear DNA content within the family (Galbraith et al., 2001). Moreover, ITS sequences from B. salicifolium have been used as outgroups in analyses that calibrate the evolutionary timeline of Apiaceae. These resources collectively demonstrate its role as a reference taxon for systematic, cytogenetic, and ecological research.
Properties relevant to use:
Chemical analyses of the aerial parts have revealed a volatile profile dominated by monoterpene hydrocarbons. Gas‑chromatography–mass‑spectrometry (GC–MS) studies have identified α‑pinene, β‑pinene, limonene and related compounds as major constituents, with minor sesquiterpenes such as β‑caryophyllene. No industrial extraction or commercial utilization of this oil or any other plant part has been documented. The reported composition is used primarily for chemotaxonomic classification of Bupleurum species. These volatiles are primarily of interest for chemotaxonomic studies, not for commercial fragrance development.
Sustainability and sourcing:
The species is assessed as “Least Concern” in the IUCN Red List and is not listed under CITES. It occurs in several Mediterranean countries where it is locally common in dry, rocky habitats. Small‑scale propagation occurs in specialty nurseries for rock‑garden or ornamental horticulture, providing a limited, non‑wild‑harvested source. International trade of the species is unrestricted. Its presence in protected areas further supports its conservation status.
