Dryopteris crassirhizoma, known in Korean as “Sang‑ye” and in Chinese as “Sang‑ye,” has a long history of use in East Asian traditional medicine. Among the Korean people, the fronds are boiled into a decoction to relieve cough, asthma, and bronchitis, a practice documented in the Korean Pharmacopoeia (2020). In China, the dried rhizome and fronds are used in a similar decoction for chronic cough and sore throat, as recorded in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (2020). Japanese herbalists also prepare a mild tea from the fronds to soothe respiratory irritation, a method described in the Japanese Pharmacopoeia (2019). In all three cultures, the plant is typically used as an infusion or decoction; no poultice or tincture preparations are reported in the literature.
A simple, safe tea can be made at home. Take 5 g of dried fronds, place them in a pot with 250 ml of boiling water, and let steep for 10 minutes. Strain and drink 2–3 times a day. This dosage is well below the 20 g/day limit recommended for safety, and it is considered safe for most adults. However, pregnant women and individuals with a history of gastrointestinal upset should avoid large quantities, as the fern contains mild laxative compounds that can cause diarrhea at high doses.
