Juniperus occidentalis, also known as the western juniper, is a shrub or tree native to the Western United States. It can be found in mountainous areas at altitudes of 800-3,000 meters and occasionally at lower elevations. This species is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List due to its widespread distribution and increasing population. It is a medium-sized plant, reaching heights of 4-15 meters, with scale-like leaves and berry-like cones. It is closely related to Juniperus grandis, which is found in California and Nevada. Western juniper is typically found in dry, rocky areas with low competition from other species. It is an important food source for birds and can also be used for commercial purposes, such as flavoring gin and producing durable lumber. In recent years, there has been an increase in the use of prescribed fires to control the expansion of this species, with positive effects on plant communities.
