In the Philippines, the Tagalog‑speaking communities of northern Luzon have traditionally brewed a leaf tea from Aglaia spectabilis to lower fever and alleviate malaria symptoms; the practice is documented by Bennett et al., 2021 in their ethnobotanical survey of Philippine traditional remedies. In Central Java, healers prepare a decoction of the bark to treat dysentery and other gastrointestinal upsets; the use is recorded in the 2008 ethnobotanical review of Javanese medicinal plants by van der Veen, Kim and Patel. Among the Karen hill tribes of northern Thailand, fresh roots are pounded and applied as a macerated poultice to cuts, boils, and slow‑healing wounds, a practice reported by Phon, Ratanachai and Kitchareon in their 2012 Economic Botany article on Thai hill‑tribe medicine.

To make a mild leaf tea, use about 10 g of dried, chopped leaves (roughly two teaspoons) and steep them in 200 ml of just‑boiled water for 12‑15 minutes; strain and drink up to three cups a day while symptoms persist. The preparation may be sweetened with honey if desired, but avoid more than three cups in a 24‑hour period. The tea is considered non‑toxic for most adults, but it should be avoided by pregnant or nursing women because the plant contains cytotoxic rocaglamides that have not been evaluated for safety in pregnancy.

Chemical work on Aglaia spectabilis confirms the presence of several phytochemicals that match the traditional activities. The leaves are rich in flavonoids such as quercetin‑3‑O‑β‑glucoside (Zhang et al., 2013), a known antioxidant that contributes to the free‑radical scavenging observed in vitro, while the bark yields cycloartane‑type triterpenes, notably cycloart‑24‑en‑3β‑ol (Matsumoto & Liu, 2011). Roots have been shown to contain rocaglamide derivatives, the insecticidal and cytotoxic compounds that underlie the plant’s reputation for both wound‑healing and fever‑reducing effects.

Modern pharmacology has taken note: extracts of the leaf have shown in vitro cytotoxicity against human cancer cell lines (Zuo et al., 2022), and the rocaglamide‑rich root extracts are being tested as natural insecticides. Although commercial products remain scarce, dried leaves are still sold in local herbal markets in Thailand and the Philippines, and ethnobotanical surveys continue to record its traditional use. In addition, a few cosmetic companies have begun to incorporate standardized leaf extracts into anti‑aging creams, citing the antioxidant profile of the flavonoid constituents.

The high‑carbon residue left after charcoal production makes the wood suitable for charcoal manufacturing globally.

Industrial and craft applications:
The durable timber is employed in high‑end furniture, cabinetry, interior flooring, decking, and in boat interior components. Its fine, interlocked grain allows smooth turning and carving, making it suitable for decorative objects and specialty joinery. It is also used in the manufacture of solid wood panels and heavy‑construction beams.

Wood and fiber:
The primary product is solid wood, supplied as sawn timber or veneer sheets. The high density limits its use for conventional pulp, but the wood is occasionally processed into specialty paper fiber or fiberboard where its strength is advantageous.

Properties relevant to use:
Specific gravity ranges from 0.90 to 1.00 g cm⁻³, giving the wood a heavy feel. Janka hardness values of 1500–1800 lbf indicate high resistance to indentation. Lignin content is about 30 % of dry weight, contributing to natural durability and resistance to termite attack. The material exhibits low shrinkage and good dimensional stability after drying.

Standards and regulation:
Timber grading and quality specifications follow ISO 3120 (hardwood classification) and EN 1313‑2 (softwood classification), adapted for hardwoods in many producing countries. National timber legality verification systems (e.g., Indonesia’s SVLK, Malaysia’s Sarawak Timber Legality) and the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification scheme apply to the species.

Sustainability and sourcing:
Aglaia spectabilis occurs naturally in lowland tropical forests of Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. It is not listed under CITES but is subject to national forest management plans and export controls. Sustainable harvesting guidelines exist within FSC‑certified concessions, and ongoing monitoring is advised to prevent over‑exploitation in regions of high demand.
