Foxtail millet, also known as Setaria italica, is an annual grass that is primarily grown for human consumption. It is the second most widely planted species of millet and is the most commonly grown millet species in Asia. The earliest evidence of foxtail millet cultivation dates back to 8,000 years ago in China, and it has been grown in India since ancient times. Foxtail millet has many other names in different languages and is typically grown in dry and upland regions. It is a warm season crop that can be harvested for hay or grain in 65-90 days. Foxtail millet is susceptible to various pests and diseases, and its wild antecedent has been identified as Setaria viridis. The earliest evidence of foxtail millet cultivation outside of its native distribution is in China, and it later spread to other regions such as Southeast Asia, East Siberia, and Europe. Foxtail millet has also been genetically studied, with the waxy gene contributing to its glutinousness.
