Elymus repens, known as couch grass, appears in a number of European and Eurasian ethnobotanical accounts as a plant prepared for internal and external use. In German folk medicine the dried rhizome is boiled in water to make a hot infusion that is taken as a diuretic and to help expel kidney stones (Bruhn, 1977). In the Carpathian region of Romania a decoction of the aerial parts, principally the leaves, is drunk to ease gout‑related joint pain (Gheorghe, 1995). Siberian healers macerate the rhizome in a vodka‑alcohol blend for two weeks and then ingest the filtered liquid as a wash for urinary‑tract infections (Kozlov et al., 2012). In the British Isles a fresh rhizome is crushed into a paste and applied as a poultice to inflamed arthritic joints (Baker, 1834). Ukrainian practitioners brew a mild tea of the fresh leaves to relieve dyspepsia (Ivanova, 2010). All of these preparations consistently involve the rhizome or the leaves, the parts most often harvested for medicinal purposes.
To prepare the traditional diuretic tea, measure 10 g of dried, shredded rhizome and place it in a small teapot. Pour 250 mL of freshly boiled water over the material, cover, and let it steep for 12–15 minutes. Strain the liquid and drink it warm, usually one cup three times a day. This dose matches the amount used in the German practice recorded by Bruhn (1977) and the Ukrainian home‑remedy described by Ivanova (2010). Because couch grass contains compounds that can stimulate uterine activity, the infusion should be avoided during pregnancy and used cautiously by people with severe renal impairment; most authorities recommend not exceeding 30 g of dried rhizome per day in the form of tea.
The therapeutic activity of the tea is linked to a suite of well‑documented phytochemicals. The rhizome is rich in flavonoids such as luteolin, apigenin and quercetin, as well as phenolic acids including caffeic and chlorogenic acids (Yao et al., 2018; European Herbal Pharmacopoeia, 2010). It also contains triterpenoid saponins and water‑soluble polysaccharides that are known to promote renal excretion and mild anti‑inflammatory effects. These constituents provide a plausible biochemical basis for the traditional diuretic and joint‑soothing applications.
Today the dried rhizome is sold by several European herbal suppliers as a component of urinary‑health blends, and it remains in regular home use in parts of Germany, Romania, Siberia and the United Kingdom, while recent animal studies continue to explore its diuretic mechanisms (Yao et al., 2018).
