Among Andean peoples, Peperomia vulcanica is valued for simple preparations that target digestive upset, fever, and minor skin injuries. According to the ethnobotanical survey by Bennett et al., 2021, the Kichwa of Ecuador boil fresh leaves in water to make a mild tea that is drunk after meals to calm stomach cramps. The same study records the Shuar of Ecuador preparing a decoction of the plant’s roots; the roots are simmered for twenty minutes and the liquid is taken in small sips to lower fevers. In the highland valleys of Colombia, the Pasto people crush fresh leaves into a poultice that is applied directly to cuts and abrasions to promote wound healing. The Kichwa also sometimes soak fresh leaves in cold water overnight to produce a macerated drink used to relieve cough, while the Pasto occasionally brew a weak leaf decoction for sore throats (Bennett et al., 2021).
To prepare a simple leaf tea, place 5 g of dried leaves in a cup, pour over 250 ml of water just off the boil (≈90 °C), cover and steep for 5–7 minutes, then strain. The resulting infusion can be enjoyed warm, one to two cups per day. Safety: the tea is generally well tolerated, but it should be avoided by pregnant women and people with known hypersensitivity to Peperomia; excessive consumption may cause mild nausea.
Phytochemical work by Pérez et al., 2022 confirmed that the leaves contain flavonoid glycosides such as quercetin and luteolin, phenolic acids including caffeic acid, and a complex essential‑oil profile dominated by α‑pinene, β‑caryophyllene and eucalyptol. These compounds are known to exert anti‑inflammatory, antioxidant and antimicrobial effects, offering a plausible biochemical basis for the traditional uses described above. In addition, the study reported modest amounts of rosmarinic acid and chlorogenic acid, which are recognized for their antioxidant and anti‑inflammatory properties, reinforcing the plant’s role in soothing inflamed tissues (Pérez et al., 2022; García & Santander, 2020).
Recent in‑vitro assays reported by Morales et al., 2023 showed that leaf extracts inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, highlighting a potential antimicrobial activity. Nonetheless, Peperomia vulcanica remains a locally harvested herb sold in Andean markets; it has not yet become a widely commercialized product, but it continues to be an important part of traditional health practices. Because the plant thrives on volcanic soils at altitudes above 2500 m, cultivation attempts in Ecuador and Colombia are being explored to reduce pressure on wild populations, while scientists are investigating its extracts for potential use in topical ointments for minor wounds (Morales et al., 2023).
