Allspice, also known as Jamaica pepper, is a dried unripe berry from the Pimenta dioica tree, native to the Greater Antilles, southern Mexico, and Central America. It is now cultivated in many warm parts of the world. The name allspice was given by the English in the 17th century, who valued it for its combination of cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove flavors. Allspice is used in a variety of cuisines, including Caribbean, Mexican, Middle Eastern, and European. It is also an important part of traditional stews and meat dishes in Arab cuisine. The allspice tree can grow up to 18 meters tall and can be grown outdoors in the tropics and subtropics. Christopher Columbus first discovered allspice on his second voyage to the New World, and it soon became a popular spice in Europe. Today, Jamaica remains the leading producer of allspice, but it is also grown in other countries in the same region.
