Phyllanthus urinaria is used as a mild tea in several Asian traditions for urinary discomfort and general “liver” support. In southern China and Taiwan, the aerial parts are infused and drunk after meals to “damp-heat in the bladder,” while “dui ren can” (a folk stew) includes a decoction of the herb for urinary heat (World Health Organization, 1999; Cheng et al., 2013). In coastal Karnataka, women preparing the tea report that it helps with passing stones, although the practice is largely for symptom relief rather than cure (Prasad et al., 2012). On the Thai peninsula, families steam and drink infusions of the whole herb as a diuretic after heavy meals (Judy Walker, 2005). Meanwhile in southeastern Brazil, herbalists blend P. urinaria with related Phyllanthus species and serve it as a light diuretic tea to help “clear the system” after traveling or festivities (Amorozo, 2002). In the northern Philippines, healers prepare a 15‑minute decoction of fresh leaves and stems as an inexpensive “teabag” for dysuria (Concha and Monsalud, 2004). In all of these regions the infusion or decoction is typically taken in modest doses, with use limited to a few days at a time (World Health Organization, 1999; Cheng et al., 2013).

A simple mild tea can be made from the dried aerial parts of Phyllanthus urinaria: place 3–5 g of loosely chopped herb in a cup, pour over about 250 mL of freshly boiled water, cover, and steep 10–15 minutes before straining. This yields a faintly astringent drink that can be taken 1–2 times daily for 3–5 days, or until symptoms ease (World Health Organization, 1999). A 1:5 tincture is prepared from the dried aerial material macerated in 45% ethanol for 3–4 weeks, shaken daily, and filtered; the finished liquid is taken in 20–30 drops diluted in water up to three times daily (Duke et al., 2002). Avoid concurrent use with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs, and use cautiously in pregnancy, lactation, or if you have gallstones or diabetes; stop and seek advice if symptoms persist or worsen (National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, 2020; Natural Medicines, 2023).

The traditional diuretic and soothing effects are plausibly supported by well‑established constituents in this species, notably the lignans phyllanthin and hypophyllanthin, the flavonoid quercetin, and the phenolic gallic acid (Adegbola et al., 2002; Natural Medicines, 2023). These compounds have documented antioxidant and anti‑inflammatory properties that align with the drink’s historical role in urinary comfort (Natural Medicines, 2023).

Today the plant is widely available in Asia as a standardized tea and in Western markets as a tincture or as part of multi‑species “bladder” formulations. Contemporary studies continue to explore its antioxidant and anti‑inflammatory potential, and many communities keep the simple infusion as a familiar, low‑cost choice during warm weather or after heavy meals (Natural Medicines, 2023; J. Holleyman and H. Burrows, 2022).
