Damiana (Turnera diffusa) is a shrub native to southern Texas, Central America, Mexico, South America, and the Caribbean. It is used in traditional Mexican liqueur and was believed to be an aphrodisiac. It contains many compounds, including damianin, tetraphyllin B, gonzalitosin I, arbutin, tricosan-2-one, acacetin, p-cymene, β-sitosterol, 1,8-cineole, apigenin, α-pinene, β-carotene, β-pinene, tannins, thymol, and hexacosanol. It is also a host plant for the Mexican fritillary butterfly. However, it is often misidentified as Turnera ulmifolia, which has different chemical constituents and ethnobotanical uses.
