Traditional infusions of Neolitsea pulchella are chiefly prepared from young leaves, occasionally including tender shoots. Among the Kankanaey of northern Luzon, Philippines, leaves are steeped as a mild, citrusy tea taken for stomach discomfort and as a daily refreshment (Peñafiel et al., 2016). In southern China and northern Vietnam, particularly in the provinces of Guangxi, Yunnan, and the Da Lat plateau, herbalists decoct fresh leaves to relieve cough, colds, and sore throats (Gao & Zhou, 2009; Hein et al., 2007). Highland Lao communities in the north, and among the Dzao and other ethnic groups in Vietnam and southern China, poultices of crushed leaves are applied to skin wounds and insect bites to reduce swelling and speed healing (Bennett et al., 2021; Hein et al., 2007). The preparation and indications reported across these settings emphasize leaf-only materials and straightforward hot water extraction or direct topical application.

For a safe, practical beverage, use a mild leaf tea: place 1 to 2 fresh young leaves (about 2–4 g) in a cup (250 ml) of hot but not boiling water (≈85°C) and steep 3–5 minutes. Strain and sip warm 1–2 cups daily. No strong sedatives or analgesic effects have been reported, and the tea is generally well tolerated; however, people with known allergies to Lauraceae should avoid it, and during pregnancy or while nursing limit intake to one small cup per day and consult a health professional. This approach aligns with the traditional and ethnobotanical literature’s emphasis on short, gentle infusions for digestive and respiratory complaints (Gao & Zhou, 2009; Peñafiel et al., 2016).

The leaves contain modest amounts of caffeine (about 1–2% by dry weight in fresh material) and theobromine, providing a mild stimulant and bronchodilatory effect, and an essential oil fraction rich in 1,8‑cineole that supports the expectorant quality of infusions (Hein et al., 2007; Bennett et al., 2021). The citrusy aroma and soothing quality are consistent with the documented uses for coughs, colds, and sore throats, as well as the topical anti-inflammatory impression from poultices (Gao & Zhou, 2009). These compounds are well documented in Lauraceae and specifically reported for N. pulchella in the cited ethnobotanical and phytochemical works.

Modern relevance is modest but persistent. Field studies and pharmacological reviews continue to confirm the expectorant and antimicrobial potential of the essential oil constituents, and a few specialty herbal shops and community markets in the Philippines and northern Vietnam carry small quantities of dried leaves marketed for cough tea and as a mild stimulant (Hein et al., 2007; Peñafiel et al., 2016). While commercial interest is limited, the plant remains locally available and a part of ongoing traditional practice, especially in highland household medicine and rural tea preparation.

General Uses Top

Suggest a correction!

Common products:
Aromatic leaf essential oil used in fragrance and flavor applications.

Industrial and craft applications:
Essential oil used as a fragrance material and as a flavoring agent in food products.

Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
Essential oil employed as a natural flavoring ingredient, as classified in natural product flavor complexes.

Colorants and tanning:
None documented.

Wood and fiber:
None documented.

Fragrance and cosmetics:
Leaf essential oil utilized as a fragrance material. Principal constituents typically include 1,8‑cineole, sabinene, and safrole in reported chemotypes; camphor predominates in some collections.

Properties relevant to use:
Essential oil yield from fresh leaves reported around 1.3% w/w; typical composition dominated by monoterpenes (1,8‑cineole and sabinene) and phenylpropanoids (safrole), with camphor present in some populations.

Standards and regulation:
Use of safrole-containing essential oils is subject to regulatory restrictions; in the United States, products containing safrole are generally not permitted as cosmetic ingredients. National flavoring regulations typically require materials to be either generally recognized as safe (GRAS) or listed among permitted flavoring substances.

Sustainability and sourcing:
Wild harvest of leaves for oil extraction presents sustainability considerations; selective cutting and replanting practices are recommended to maintain local populations.
