Mentha aquatica, known as water mint, thrives along riverbanks and wetlands throughout temperate Europe and parts of the Middle East. The aromatic leaves and flowering tops have been collected for centuries for their soothing and digestive properties. In the Breton countryside of northwestern France, a warm infusion of the fresh leaves and stems is taken after meals to relieve flatulence and indigestion; Gildemeister et al., 1998 recorded this practice in a survey of traditional remedies among the local peasantry. Across the Scottish Highlands, rural healers prepare a decoction by simmering 10 g of fresh aerial parts in 300 ml of water for ten minutes and drink a small cup as a mild expectorant for coughs and bronchial irritation, a use documented by MacLeod, 2010. In the Druze villages of northern Israel, fresh leaves are macerated in water and applied directly as a poultice to soothe insect bites and minor skin irritations; Rashid et al., 2005 described this application in their ethnobotanical study of the community.

The most common home preparation is a mild tea. Using about 2 g of fresh water‑mint leaves and tender stems—roughly a tablespoon—place them in a cup and pour 200 ml of just‑boiled water over them. Cover and steep for five to seven minutes, then strain. Sweetened with a little honey if desired, the tea is usually taken in the morning or after a heavy meal. Safety notes: limit intake to two or three cups per day; the plant contains pulegone, a compound that can be toxic in large amounts, so pregnant or nursing women should avoid it, and excessive consumption may cause stomach upset.

Chemical analyses have repeatedly identified the essential oil of Mentha aquatica as rich in menthol and menthone, together with smaller amounts of pulegone, limonene and menthyl acetate. Flavonoids such as luteolin and apigenin, as well as phenolic acids including rosmarinic acid, are also present, as reported by Kumar et al., 2019 and Rossi & Tôrres, 2020. These constituents are well known for their cooling, antispasmodic and antioxidant activities, which can plausibly underlie the soothing digestive and mild decongestant effects described in the traditional preparations.

Contemporary research has confirmed the antioxidant potential of the extract, and wild‑mint teas bearing the name “water mint” are now available in specialty herb shops, reflecting a revival of interest in this traditional plant while it continues to be used locally in folk medicine.
