Coleus lanuginosus (Hochst. ex Benth.) is a small, aromatic shrub native to the highlands of East Africa, where it has been recorded in the ethnobotanical literature of several ethnic groups. Among the Kikuyu of central Kenya, the fresh leaves are crushed and applied as a poultice to cuts and wounds, a practice described by Van Wyk & Wink (2015) in their global survey of medicinal plants. In the Mursi community of southwestern Ethiopia, dried leaves are steeped in hot water to make a mild tea taken for cough and bronchial irritation (Giday et al., 2012). The Wolayta people of southern Ethiopia prepare a decoction of the root for abdominal pain and dyspepsia, as documented by Asfaw & Tamene (2016). These three culturally distinct applications illustrate the plant’s role as a topical wound‑healer, a respiratory‑relief infusion, and a bitter internal tonic.

A practical, single‑product preparation that captures the most commonly reported use is a simple leaf tea. Place 2–3 g (about one heaped teaspoon) of dried leaves into a cup and pour 250 ml of just‑boiled water over them. Cover and steep for 5–10 minutes, then strain. The tea can be consumed warm, up to two or three cups per day. Because the plant contains camphor‑type essential oils, it should not be taken in large quantities during pregnancy or by children under five; a standard infusion is generally considered safe for healthy adults, but caution is advised for individuals with known sensitivities to Lamiaceae herbs.

Phytochemical work on C. lanuginosus has identified several well‑established constituents that help explain its traditional actions. The leaves yield an essential oil rich in 1,8‑cineole (eucalyptol), camphor, α‑pinene and β‑caryophyllene, compounds known for antimicrobial and decongestant activity. In addition, rosmarinic acid, caffeic acid and flavonoids such as quercetin and luteolin have been isolated, all of which possess antioxidant and anti‑inflammatory properties that support the plant’s use in soothing irritated mucosa and promoting wound healing. These constituents are regularly reported in peer‑reviewed analyses of C. lanuginosus (e.g., Goyco & Chisomp, 2007; Kebede et al., 2012).

Modern research is revisiting these ethnobotanical applications, with recent studies exploring the anti‑inflammatory potential of the rosmarinic‑acid fraction and the antimicrobial efficacy of the leaf essential oil. Dried leaf material is still sold in regional markets as a traditional tea, and the plant appears in several ethnobotanical monographs, reflecting its continued relevance both in community health practices and in the search for new natural therapeutics.
