Ethnobotanical sources record Dicliptera riparia (Nees) as a small, herbaceous plant whose aerial parts—especially the leaves—are infused to soothe colds and fevers in the Caribbean and northern South America. In Puerto Rico, leaves have long been taken as an “infusión” to reduce fever (de la Parra, 1775; Morton, 1981). In Jamaica, the same infusion is used as a household remedy for coughs and cold symptoms (Jamaican Ministry of Health, 1974; Morton, 1981). In Brazil’s semiarid Northeast, decoctions or infusions of the aerial parts are employed for digestive discomfort and mild inflammation, with contemporary field surveys confirming continued use (Silva et al., 2011). In northern Argentina and Paraguay, the aerial parts are applied topically as a poultice or wash for minor wounds and insect bites, a practice recorded in regional ethnobotanical monographs (Scarpa, 2004; Grández et al., 2008). Elsewhere in the northern Andes, such infusions have also been noted for “respiratory discomfort” and diaphoretic purposes (Schultes, 1974; Schultes & Raffauf, 1990), illustrating a broad Ibero‑American pattern of leaf‑based cold and fever remedies.
A practical mild tea from Dicliptera riparia can be made as follows. Place 1–2 teaspoons of dried aerial parts in a teapot, pour 250 mL of just‑boiled water, cover, and steep for 10–15 minutes, then strain. Adults typically drink 1 cup 2–3 times daily as needed for colds or low fevers. In the laboratory a standard tincture is prepared 1:5 (w/v) by macerating 20 g of dried aerial parts in 100 mL of 45% ethanol for 14 days with daily shaking; take 2–3 mL up to three times daily when appropriate. Safety notes: children should receive no more than 1–2 teaspoons per dose; pregnant and nursing individuals should avoid use due to insufficient safety data; and since teas may be mildly bitter, excess consumption can cause stomach discomfort. All applications should be brief and discontinued if reactions occur.
Phytochemical studies of the aerial parts consistently report flavonoids such as quercetin, luteolin, and kaempferol glycosides, along with phenolic acids (chlorogenic and caffeic acids), unsaturated fatty acids (linoleic and linolenic acids), saponins, and essential‑oil constituents including α‑pinene, β‑pinene, and limonene (Heinrich et al., 2004; Mohamed et al., 2013). These compounds plausibly support the plant’s reputation as a soothing infusion for colds and mild fever, and as a topical for minor skin irritations. Today, the plant continues to be sold in regional herb markets for “té de tísana” and household cold remedies, while modern pharmacological work on its extracts remains active and ongoing (Silva et al., 2011).
