Across Taiwan and nearby islands, people report a simple use of the vine Glycine tomentella. Among the Paiwan of southern Taiwan, dried roots are decocted with water as a mild diuretic tea (Wu et al., 2006). In Hakka villages the roots are likewise simmered in water and taken to promote urination, especially for “water retention,” whereas young leaves are ground and applied fresh or as a warm poultice to open wounds or bruises (Chen, 2013). In Fujian and Taiwan markets the dried roots are sold for decoctions used by elderly or by lactating women; one commonly bought species in this category is listed as G. tomentella (Lin et al., 2008). In the Philippines, local informants in Samar and Leyte reported using crushed fresh leaves as a poultice for skin infections, with some noting that the plant they called “urinaria” corresponded to G. tomentella when shown voucher material (Mendoza, 2007).
Practical recipe. To make a diuretic tea: simmer about 10–15 g of cleaned, sliced dried roots in 500 mL of water for 15–20 minutes, cool, and drink a half cup to a cup per day as tolerated (Wu et al., 2006; Lin et al., 2008). The same strained liquor may be chilled and used as a mild compress on bruises or small wounds (Chen, 2013). Do not exceed 1–2 cups per day, and avoid prolonged regular use without supervision. Because the root contains phytoestrogenic isoflavones, pregnant women and people with estrogen‑sensitive conditions should consult a qualified practitioner; also discontinue use before surgery or if taking anticoagulants (Lin et al., 2008).
Active constituents. Phytochemical work on the root shows it to be rich in isoflavones, notably daidzein and genistein, along with related glycosides and coumestrol, chemicals widely recognized in legumes and consistent with estrogen‑related activity (Kuo et al., 2012). These constituents help explain why preparations have been associated historically with women’s health in market contexts (Lin et al., 2008).
Modern relevance. The species is still sold in Taiwan as an ingredient for “nursing tea” and as a material for home diuretic decoctions, while scientists continue to study its isoflavones for estrogenic and anti‑inflammatory effects (Kuo et al., 2012; Lin et al., 2008).
General Uses Top
Suggest a correction!Common products:
Animal feed: The species is used as a forage crop and for pasture improvement. Its high protein content (up to 22% dry matter) and moderate digestibility make it suitable for livestock feed.
Industrial and craft applications:
Soil conservation and stabilization: The deep taproot system and creeping growth habit provide effective ground cover for erosion control on slopes and degraded soils.
Properties relevant to use:
* Forage quality: High protein content and relatively low fiber (crude fiber ~30% dry matter) contribute to feed value, while the presence of condensed tannins (proanthocyanidins) can reduce bloating risk in ruminants compared to some other forage legumes.
* Root system and nitrogen fixation: The taproot and associated *Bradyrhizobium* symbiosis facilitate nitrogen fixation, enhancing soil fertility and supporting soil conservation functions.
* Vigor and adaptation: Shows good adaptation to degraded soils and stressful environments relevant to erosion control applications.
No reliable sources document uses in the following categories for *Glycine tomentella*: Culinary uses, Colorants and tanning, Wood and fiber, Fragrance and cosmetics, Adhesives/coatings, Biofuels/bioplastics, Fermentation feedstocks, Scientific/model organism use (beyond forage/symbiotic genetics research), Standards and regulation (specific to its forage/soil uses), or Sustainability and sourcing.
