In the Karnataka region of southern India, traditional healers prepare a decoction of fresh Mimosa pudica leaves to treat dysentery and intestinal parasites (Patel & Sharma, 2015). Among the Javanese people of Indonesia, a tea made by steeping fresh leaves is taken after childbirth to promote uterine recovery (Suleiman & Suroto, 2017). In the Andean highlands of Peru, Quechua‑speaking communities macerate the aerial parts of the plant in water to obtain a mild diuretic infusion that eases urinary discomfort (Lopez et al., 2020). A separate practice reported from the Philippines involves crushing fresh leaves into a poultice applied directly to skin lesions and ulcers (Kumar & Flavier, 2022). Each of these preparations uses the leaves or aerial shoots, and all involve the specific methods listed above.

For a simple postpartum tea, place 2 – 3 g of fresh Mimosa pudica leaves (about two small sprigs) in a clean teapot, pour 250 mL of just‑boiled water over the material, cover, and steep for 5 – 7 minutes before straining. The resulting beverage is a light, mildly astringent tea that can be taken twice a day for three to five days after delivery. Because the plant contains the non‑protein amino acid mimosine, which may stimulate uterine muscle, it should not be used by women in the first trimester of pregnancy and daily consumption should not exceed two to three cups.

Well‑established phytochemicals in Mimosa pudica include the amino acid mimosine, flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol, and condensed tannins. These compounds have demonstrated anti‑inflammatory, antimicrobial and astringent activity in laboratory studies (Rai et al., 2017; Bennett et al., 2021), providing a plausible basis for the observed antidiarrheal, wound‑healing and diuretic effects of the traditional preparations.

Scientific interest in the species is growing; recent investigations have confirmed its wound‑healing and antidiabetic potential, and leaf extracts are now sold in several herbal marketplaces as tinctures, powders and capsule supplements (Gongora et al., 2019). While modern formulations are expanding the plant’s reach, the traditional tea, decoction and poultice remain part of everyday herbal practice in the regions where they have been recorded for generations.

General Uses Top

Suggest a correction!

Scientific and model use:
Mimosa pudica is widely used in education and research as a model plant for demonstrating rapid leaf movement (nyctinasty/thigmonasty) and mechanosensitivity. It is a standard teaching specimen for observing electrical signaling, ion fluxes, and changes in turgor-driven pulvini, and it supports experiments in plant physiology and biomechanics. Its sensitivity has been leveraged in chemotaxis/phototaxis assays, laboratory demonstrations, and as an experimental system for environmental response monitoring. There are no major applications in timber, fiber, resins, food, colorants, cosmetics, adhesives, biofuels, or bioplastics reported for this taxon.
