Amorpha fruticosa, also known as desert false indigo, is a perennial shrub in the legume family. It can grow up to 5-6 meters in height and has oval-shaped, hairy leaves and purple flowers with yellow anthers. It is native to North America and can be found in various habitats such as stream edges, open woods, and roadsides. This plant has also been introduced to other continents and is often cultivated as an ornamental plant. It contains compounds that have shown potential in treating diabetes and other metabolic conditions. Amorpha fruticosa is also an important food source for various insects and birds. There are several cultivars of this plant, including those with white flowers, curled leaves, and arching branches.
