This evergreen shrub is native to Yunnan and Sichuan, China and can grow up to 3.5 meters tall. It has oval or lanceolate leaves and produces red tube-shaped flowers from February to June. The plant was first described by French botanist Adrien René Franchet in 1895 and is closely related to R. triflorum. It is typically found in coniferous forests at altitudes of 1,900 to 2,500 meters. In cultivation, it prefers acidic soil and a shady environment. Rhododendron spinuliferum has also been used in hybrid cultivars and in Chinese traditional medicine to treat respiratory issues.
