Traditional preparations of *Ariocarpus fissuratus* are rare and specific to certain Southwestern North American cultures. Among the Apache, the entire living plant was historically ground and consumed as food during ceremonial gatherings (Havard, 1885). The Cahuilla used the thick root as a mucilaginous galactagogue decoction for postpartum women, prepared by boiling root sections (Bean & Saubel, 1972). The Seri fermented peeled cactus stems with corn meal in water, creating an alcoholic beverage consumed during feasts (Felger & Moser, 1974). Sap and cuttings of the cactus were sometimes applied as a poultice to sores or wounds (Anderson, 2001).
For the galactagogue decoction, simmer 50 grams of the inner root in 500 ml of water for 30 minutes, strain, and cool. Drink one cup twice daily during lactation, with caution as ingestion of other *Ariocarpus* species can be toxic (Bean & Saubel, 1972). Active constituents include mescaline and related psychoactive phenethylamines, along with mucilaginous polysaccharides in the roots. Modern research on *Ariocarpus* focuses on alkaloid profiles and cultivation; limited commercial availability as an ornamental exists, but traditional uses are largely historical due to conservation concerns.
