Asparagus filicinus (Buch.-Ham. ex D. Don) has a modest but documented role in local Himalayan folk medicine. In the western Himalaya, people have used aerial parts in teas or decoctions as mild diuretics and for general urinary complaints (Singh, 2010; Kumar et al., 2020). In Uttarakhand, the same parts are employed in poultices and washes for minor skin inflammations and wound care (Tiwari & Rao, 2015). Among Nepali communities, water extracts of shoots or aerial parts have been taken as gentle digestive tonics after heavy meals (Sharma & Gurung, 2018). The records consistently point to infusions and decoctions of young shoots and aerial parts rather than roots.

A simple mild tea can be made by steeping 2–3 g of freshly harvested aerial parts or young shoots in 250–300 mL of just-boiled water for 10–12 minutes, then straining. This dose is typically used 1–2 times per day for short periods (≤7–10 days). If a stronger diuretic or urinary rinse is desired, a decoction using 3–5 g of the same material simmered in 250–300 mL water for 15–20 minutes can be cooled and taken in similar daily quantities. Safety guidance is conservative: avoid in pregnancy and lactation, do not use with known allergies to Asparagus, and discontinue if GI upset or urinary irritation occurs. For any kidney or heart conditions, a healthcare professional should be consulted before use.

Phytochemical work on Asparagus filicinus shows flavonoids (quercetin, rutin), saponins, and steroidal saponins, as well as rutin and quercetin glycosides in aerial parts and shoots. These constituents plausibly underpin the plant’s mild diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant actions reported in ethnomedicinal contexts.

Contemporary interest is growing, with small pilot studies evaluating diuretic and antioxidant activity and a few specialty teas appearing in regional markets. Even so, A. filicinus remains a lesser‑known Himalayan wild asparagus, and its traditional infusions and decoctions continue to be used locally for urinary comfort and gentle digestive support.
