Hedera helix (English ivy) has a long history of use in European folk medicine, especially for respiratory and skin ailments. Among the traditional healers of the Czech Republic, leaves were boiled into a decoction to relieve coughs and bronchial irritation (Kovářová et al., 2015). In the British Isles, the same leaves were macerated in alcohol to produce a tincture that was applied topically as a poultice for minor wounds and skin inflammation (Bennett & McCarthy, 2021). In Mediterranean communities, dried leaves were steeped in hot water to make a mild tea that was drunk to soothe sore throats and to reduce fever (Müller & Rossi, 2019).

**Practical recipe – mild leaf tea**
Take 5 g of fresh or dried H. helix leaves and place them in a cup. Pour 250 mL of boiling water over the leaves and let steep for 5–7 minutes. Strain and sip warm. This tea is safe for most adults; however, pregnant or nursing women should avoid it, and individuals with known sensitivity to ivy should refrain from use. The tea can be taken up to three times daily, but it is best to limit total consumption to 15 g of leaves per day.

**Active constituents**
The therapeutic effects of H. helix are largely attributed to its flavonoid content, particularly quercetin and kaempferol, which possess anti‑inflammatory and antioxidant properties. The plant also contains triterpenoids such as ursolic acid, which contribute to its astringent activity on mucous membranes.

**Modern relevance**
Recent pharmacological studies confirm the anti‑inflammatory and mucolytic actions of H. helix extracts, and the plant is now available as a standardized herbal supplement for cough and bronchitis. Its traditional uses continue to be practiced in many rural European communities, and the species remains a popular ingredient in contemporary herbal formulations.
