Picea mariana, also known as the black spruce, is a coniferous tree native to North America. It is found in all 10 Canadian provinces and 3 territories, and is the official tree of Newfoundland and Labrador. It is also found in parts of the United States, including Alaska, the Great Lakes region, and the upper Northeast. The tree is a common part of the taiga or boreal forest biome. Its Latin name, mariana, means "of the Virgin Mary." The black spruce is a slow-growing tree with a narrow, pointed crown and dark bluish-green needles. Its cones are the smallest of all spruces and are produced in dense clusters. The tree is known for its ability to survive in wet, nutrient-poor soils and is often found in peat bogs and swamps. It is also a pioneer species, meaning it is one of the first to grow in areas after a fire. The black spruce is used for its timber, primarily for pulpwood, and is also used to make cross laminated timber. It has cultural significance as the provincial tree of Newfoundland and Labrador and has been used to make spruce gum and beer.
