Industrial and craft applications:
The heartwood is naturally resistant to decay and insect damage and is used in high-durability construction: temple and shrine architecture, exterior cladding, exposed beams and joints, flooring, and joinery. The aromatic, fine grain accepts polishing and is used for interior paneling and high-quality woodworking. Lumber may be treated with standard softwood preservatives for exterior applications when required by specification.

Wood and fiber:
Material class: durable softwood timbers and decorative veneers. Parts used: heartwood and sapwood (processed as lumber); sliced/planed veneer. Plant form: sawn boards and structural timbers; sliced veneer for paneling. The stable dimensional behavior and aromatic character are valued in architectural millwork.

Fragrance and cosmetics:
Part used: wood and foliage. Product type: natural essential oil (hydrodistillation) used in fragrance compounding. Typical product names: Hiba oil or Hinoki-ofune oil.

Properties relevant to use:
Resistance to wood-destroying organisms is attributed to extractives (e.g., thujic acid) characteristic of Cupressaceae heartwoods. Essential oil yield from wood/foliage is low to moderate; the oil is non-Newtonian at ambient temperature due to high-molecular-weight neutral extractives and contains monoterpenes (e.g., α- and γ-thujene, sabinene, terpinolene) and sesquiterpenes (e.g., thujopsene), conferring a characteristic odor profile used in perfumery.

Standards and regulation:
Lumber is graded and marketed under Japanese Agricultural Standards (JAS) for Hiba (Hinoki-ofune), covering species identification and grading. Essential oil for fragrance complies with IFRA standards (including IFRA QRA and the IFRA/OIFRA Standard for Thujic acid) and applicable national cosmetics regulations where sold.
