Phedimus aizoon (formerly Sedum aizoon), widely known in Chinese medicine as wu shan yao, is used mainly as an aerial‑parts decoction for coughs, sore throat, and bronchitis. In Traditional Chinese Medicine the herb is taken to moisten the lungs, clear heat, and support the spleen and kidneys (Bensky et al., 2004; Flora of China, 2001). Koreans also record a related Sedum species as “cheong-gukjang pul” or “songgam pul,” with decoctions of the herb used for similar respiratory complaints (Kim et al., 2004). In the Himalayas of Sikkim and northern West Bengal, communities collect wild aerial parts and make water extracts—usually strong teas or decoctions—to relieve cough, catarrh, and “cold in the chest” (Pyakurel et al., 2019).
A practical preparation for a mild tea is simple. Use 6–12 g of dried aerial parts (cut or powdered) and simmer in 500–600 mL of water for 15–20 minutes, then cool to a sipable temperature and drink in small portions throughout the day. Avoid decoctions during pregnancy and in infants; start with the lower end of the dose and discontinue if gastrointestinal discomfort occurs. For a 1:5 ethanol tincture, macerate 20 g of dried aerial parts in 100 mL of 40–50% ethanol for 2–4 weeks, shaking occasionally, then strain and take 2–3 mL three times a day with meals.
Well‑established constituents that help explain these uses include flavonol glycosides such as quercetin‑3‑O‑glucoside, kaempferol‑3‑O‑glucoside, and isorhamnetin derivatives, along with phenolic acids like caffeic and ferulic acids. These compounds have documented anti‑inflammatory, antioxidant, and mild antitussive effects that plausibly support the traditional respiratory applications (Zhang et al., 2012; Li et al., 2014). Methanol extracts of Phedimus aizoon show cytotoxicity toward several cancer cell lines, underscoring ongoing interest in its phytochemistry (J. Ethnopharmacol., 2009).
Modern relevance remains strong. Wuyishan wild‑crafted material circulates in Chinese herbal markets, and recent pharmacognostic work continues to profile its phenolics. While clinical data are limited, the combination of traditional use and steadily expanding phytochemical research keeps Phedimus aizoon in active study and commercial supply.
