Ulmus glabra—commonly called wych elm—has been used in Europe as a mild demulcent tea and soothing poultice. In the British Isles, herbal practice traditionally prepared a decoction or infusion of inner bark to soothe irritated respiratory passages and the digestive tract (Allen and Hatfield, 2004). Across northern and central Europe, country pharmacopeias record infusions of bark or bark chips for catarrh and sore throats, while poultices of moistened bark were applied to inflamed skin, wounds, and ulcers (Hegi, 1906–1931; Blumenthal, 2000). In some Russian and Baltic traditions, a decoction of leaf or young twig tips was taken as a gentle gargle for throat irritations (Kreft et al., 2002). In Scandinavia, dried inner-bark infusions were used for indigestion and dysentery-like complaints, while the macerated, moistened bark was poulticed onto sores and burns (Hegnauer, 1973).

A practical, widely applicable preparation is a mild inner-bark infusion. Measure about 3–5 g of dried Ulmus glabra inner bark (slivered or finely cut) per 200–250 mL of just-off-the-boil water. Infuse covered for 15–20 minutes, then strain. For respiratory comfort, sip a cup 2–3 times daily; for topical use, allow the liquid to cool to comfortably warm, saturate a clean cloth, and apply as a gentle poultice. Do not exceed usual dietary amounts; elm bark tea is not recommended during pregnancy or lactation unless a qualified practitioner advises otherwise.

The demulcent action is consistent with well-established constituents of elms, notably mucilaginous polysaccharides (arabinose-rich and mannose-rich polysaccharides) and flavonoids such as rutin. These compounds form a soothing gel that coats and protects mucous membranes, plausibly accounting for the traditional relief of coughs, sore throats, and gastric irritation (Hegnauer, 1973).

Today, wych elm is occasionally used in wildcrafting-inspired practice alongside other elm species, and dried bark remains available from specialty herbal suppliers. Modern research on related elms confirms significant mucilage content and anti-inflammatory effects, supporting ongoing traditional interest in Ulmus glabra for gentle, demulcent preparations (e.g., Malviya et al., 2011).

Common products:
Seasoned lumber and veneer for furniture and interior joinery; logs are processed into sawn timber and veneer. Chips are used in hardwood pulp mills for uncoated paper grades and packaging. Charcoal and fuelwood; charcoal has historic use as a drawing medium in inks and prints. Other products include bark and leaf litter for compost.

Industrial and craft applications:
Elm wood is used for lumber, millwork, and interior doors; veneer is sliced for surface lamination. Chips serve as hardwood pulp furnish for uncoated papers and packaging boards; the wood’s relatively high lignin content supports both mechanical and chemical pulping. Elm wood charcoal is a traditional drawing medium. Properties enabling these uses include high density, good bending strength and toughness, and moderate lignin and extractives content.

Wood and fiber:
The wood is valued for furniture parts, millwork, and interior joinery due to its grain figure and mechanical properties. Veneer is used in layups where figure is desired. Fiber is utilized in pulp for paper and packaging; fiber length is moderate and lignin content relatively high, supporting pulping efficiency and strength.

Colorants and tanning:
The inner bark contains ellagitannins and other polyphenols that yield brown shades on protein fibers; the bark has been used as a natural brown dye for wool and as a tanning agent in leather processing. Use relies on high phenolic content and hydrolysable tannins with strong protein binding.

Properties relevant to use:
High density and toughness; moderate lignin content (around 23–28%) and extractives contribute to durability and color. The inner bark’s hydrolysable tannins are responsible for dye and tannin extraction. Charcoal’s porosity supports drawing applications.

Sustainability and sourcing:
Wild elm populations have been severely reduced by Dutch elm disease, and disease-resistant cultivars are preferred for plantations and amenity planting. Wood supply is therefore limited and often local; commercial sources prioritize trees removed for management reasons rather than harvest for processing.

Standards and regulation:
Wood quality and grading follow regional timber standards; for the EU and UK these include EN 1316 (hardwood logs) and EN 844 (round and sawn timber). Pulp and paper chips conform to mill specifications for moisture, size distribution, and contamination. Charcoal for artistic use may conform to charcoal drawing medium specifications such as ASTM D6903. Bark-derived dyes and tannins used in textiles must meet general chemical safety and labeling requirements in their respective jurisdictions.
