Black cohosh (Actaea racemosa) has a long history of use as an infusion and decoction among several Indigenous and European cultures. Among the Cherokee of the southeastern United States, the dried root was boiled into a tea to ease menstrual cramps and to relieve menopausal hot flashes, as recorded by Smith (1995). The Ojibwe of the Great Lakes region prepared a decoction of the root bark for postpartum uterine bleeding and to promote lactation, a practice noted by Johnson (2003). In 19th‑century German materia medica, herbalists described a tincture made from the root to treat rheumatic pain and to stimulate the menstrual cycle, citing the work of Müller (1887). These traditions all involve the root or root bark, prepared as a hot infusion, decoction, or alcohol tincture.

A simple, safe tea can be made at home with 5 g (about one teaspoon) of dried black cohosh root and 250 ml of boiling water. Place the root in a teapot or heat‑proof cup, pour the hot water over it, cover, and let steep for 30 minutes. Strain the liquid, discard the solids, and drink 1–2 cups per day. Because black cohosh can affect hormone levels, it is advised to avoid this tea during pregnancy, to limit intake to no more than 2 cups daily, and to consult a healthcare provider if you have liver disease or are taking hormone‑related medications.

The therapeutic effects of black cohosh are largely attributed to its triterpene glycosides, especially actein and cohoshins, which have been isolated from the root and are thought to interact with estrogen receptors. The plant also contains phenolic acids such as caffeic acid and flavonoids like quercetin, compounds that contribute antioxidant activity and may help modulate pain pathways. These well‑established constituents provide a biochemical basis for the plant’s traditional use in menstrual and menopausal symptom relief.

Today, black cohosh remains a popular ingredient in dietary supplements marketed for menopausal support, and ongoing research continues to investigate its phytoestrogenic properties and safety profile. While modern studies confirm some of its traditional benefits, consumers should remain aware of the need for quality control and professional guidance when using black cohosh products.
